I'm looking at getting a new air lid for my '01 trans am. Can anyone help me out, I don't understand what the balck tube on the driver side coming off of the air box is for. Do you even need it?

Just get a lid, plug the holes and rip it all out.
Well, that's what I would do.

I took out my AIR/EGR system and replaced my oil cap with one. It allows the crankcase to breath...

alright, so i'm gonna get a new air lid soon. I have the stock MAF sensor but plan on upgrading that in a month or so. What size outlet is logical, 98mm or 104mm. Do you need the same size MAF as lid?

Don't touch the MAF till about 500hp or so. It's really not needed yet.

Been discussed here many times, you don't need to change you MAF until ~500 HP. Put that $$$ to subframe connectors.

Most folks say 'a lid is a lid'... I have an SLP lid. I have seen others state that the lid doesn't seal 100% to the airbox. I completely agree. My 'check oil' light has been flashing, and I just changed the oil. My thought was that pollen was getting in, so I pulled the lid off just today. Sure enough, I found large bits of pollen type material caught on the MAF screen. I went to the autozone and bought some adhesive foam weather stripping and lined the inner edge of the lid with it. I reattached the lid and it was much harder to pop into place, and after a couple of minutes I took it back off and could clearly see the indented markings of the filter edge in the foam. So now I know that the lid is sealed tightly!
Just something to keep in mind. I don't know if other brands of lids, like the Fast Toys or Blackwing lids, fit better and might not give this kind of issue...

PS, if you buy a K&N filter, it comes with a border of foam weathersealer to line the inside of the lid with, for just this reason. The SLP lid itself just comes with 1 edge of foam for the back edge, wherease the K&N filter comes with a nice rectangular piece for lining all four edges. However, I bought my filter FIRST so it's nice lining was on the stock lid. I can't say for sure if it would've helped seal the lid better, maybe some others can comment to that?
Buy if you haven't already bought a K&N filter, my advise is to buy it AFTER the lid so you can apply that foal seal to the new lid instead of your stock lid...Last edited by Schmalgar; 04-08-2010 at 11:01 PM.

Thanks Schmalgar, great info.
PS = why did Pontiac put that large baffle setup behind their lid, just for noise reduction?

From what I understand, yes it's strictly for noise reduction. Since removing it, I have heard the air whistling in a bit, but only at high speeds, like 70+ mph...
Also, what nobody has ever mentioned, as far as I have found, is that it's a total pain to remove the MAF from the stock airbox. The round connecting piece of the airbox has grooves on the inside that seriously grip the lip on the MAF. I could not for the life of me pull the MAF out of the stock airbox!
I had to cut through the stock airbox to get it off the MAF. Was really upset when I saw why! Seems silly since they also clamped it. Bit of overkill...
So keep that in mind also. Maybe someone can tell you how to pull it apart without damaging your stock airbox...
