You should research a little bit... There is a huge legal dispute between The Monastery and the original Universal Life Church... The ULC headquarter site is here: http://www.ulchq.com/ and a recognized friendly site with good information and forums is here: http://www.ulc.net/
The folks at the Monastery have had some "issues", to put it mildly...
Kirby Hensley started the ULC: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kirby_J._Hensley
And there is even a hokey classic song called the Modesto Messiah: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-fxfaWdm9Zs"]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-fxfaWdm9Zs[/ame]

Yes it is perfectly legit.
Johnny Carson and all four Beatles became ministers through mail order back in the day.
It is technically not an internet ordinatuion since a real minister approves each applicant.
However... People who minister in well known denominations often spend years of study achieving ordained status. They work hard and the studies are difficult.
In the clergy, studies from one denomination do not transfer to another like college credits so there are very few options for ministers who truly wish to be non denominational. I studied religion in college and I became ordained through the ULC and have established a successful practice as a wedding minister. I am considering venturing into funerals but I am doing my homework first because that aspect of grief is of critical importance to the families and friends of the deceased.
In my wedding business I use my ordination to support and honor the traditions of the people getting married and their families. Destination weddings are quite popular but people often have a difficult time locating clergy to perform weddings in unfamiliar areas. Most ministers do not travel outside of their church or congregation, and many are opposed to inter-faith marriages. This is where I come in.
Initially it was a lot of work setting up a template of ceremony options, readings, sub-ceremonies, blessings, and creating it in a manner that appeals to most religious faiths while not being too religious for the agnostics and atheists.
Now a ceremony, plus my prep time, takes roughly four hours and I am able to charge from $300-$500 per wedding.
It may not be retirment level income but it is a nice part time business and I get to meet many people and enjoy their celebration with them.

Now dont get me wrong, I would never consider myself a chaplain, or part of the clergy. I know how hard those guys work to get where they are, all I did was sign up online.
I think the only time I would use it is if someone close to me wanted a destination wedding. My aunt wanted to get married in Paris a few years ago, but Couldn't get anyone to do it, plus shed have to pay for them to go.
I know this sounds contradicting, but i did this as a joke, but I don't think religious officials are a joke.
