Avast is a good product I have been running updates for my clients all day long. Disabling autorun is also a useful thing to do in case of an infection ith this particular issue.

There is a free checker here as well (Bit Defender):

I downloaded the bit defender removal tool and ran it on all my computers in safe mode.

I also made sure my anti-virus was up to date and ran full scans (also in safe mode).

I ran windows updates on all my comouters and when finished, ran it again (because sometimes updating stimulates more updates).

I also cleaned all caches and temporary files, ran Ccleaner, and did defrags on all drives since I was already into it.

The goal is to make sure the worm is not present. If there is no worm you will have no problem.

An informal way to tell is to try running Microsoft update and if it fails you should start looking further...

If you are really anal you can disable autorun as this is how the current worm seems to spread. Make sure there are no autorun files in the root directories of any drives.

I suspect this worm is more hype than substance but with the vast number of crappy computers online that are not updated or protected the potential is there to cause some damage...

    Bit Defender:
    http://www.bdtools.net/

    Microsoft removal tool: http://www.microsoft.com/security/ma...e/default.mspx

    Microsoft Update: http://update.microsoft.com/

A good friend of mine wrote and published this article:
    http://www.channelinsider.com/c/a/Se...-Need--633629/

I would avoid disabling auto run unless you know what you are doing, although you can check your root drive (usually C:\) and make sure there are no files called autorun in it, same for the root of any network driver or USB drives, or writable CDs (hand made stuff)... If you want to try it, the link is here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/967715

ALWAYS make a backup before you do anything substancial. As a matter of fact... Making a full backup right now is a good idea because if anything does happen, you can set the date back and restore if necessary to recover your stuff prior to the problem.

Have at it... I suspect this will not be as significant an issue as many are making it out to be (hopefully).
