There's a few. Not all exactly free, but "little to nothing" mods.
- Port/Descreen MAF Sensor ('94-97 cars)
- Remove Air silencer
- Relocate IAT Sensor
- Ported stock TB
- Throttle Body Bypass
If anyone can think of something else, please add.
LS1 swap...
LS1 Swap is far from free bud, and for the money you would spend on the swap, + the parts to build the motor up to your desired power level (considering you want high horsepower), you could get an LT1 combo from Advanced Induction and be making in excess of 500 rear-wheel naturally aspirated for much much less.
The air silencer I can do, that seems easy enough, basically just take it off and find a way to plug the place where it was...easy.
IAT sensor, i would like a little more info on that as well.
TB Bypass? I'd assume there's a bit of info on install university on that one? I think i've read about it before, but thought that it was only for LS1's so i never paid attention.
Porting the MAF or TB I won't do, however, not until I learn more about that kind of stuff.
Gutting my cats is do-able, almost. If i'm going to go through the trouble of getting them off of there, I'm going to be replacing with some headers and an ORY. Thats how I look at it, yeah, sure, its not free, but why do the same job, essentially, twice?
here is all u need to know for the TB coolent bypass

Whats the purpose, prevent heatsoak of hot coolant flowing through the TB?
u got it
Not sure on an LT1, maybe 8 at the wheels. But GMHTP magazine did an article on free mods on the LS1. They did 5 of them with dyno runs before and after and gained 11rwhp at the wheels. Of course, everyone's results will be different, but its just something to compare to and consider.
Simply informs the PCM of the temperature of air entering the engine. It's the little black wire tube with the blue connector that connects into the side of your inlet elbow. This is more of a theoretical mod in my opinion since it is only a back up to your Engine Coolant Temperature sensor, and the computer will primarily use the ECT to make adjustments. But some believe that by relocating it from the elbow to closer to the beginning of the intake, lets say, into the airbox for example, the cooler reading will cause the PCM to adjust fuel parameters.
In my opinion the PCM will still refer to the ECT and offset this, but some believe this mod has benifits. Oh well, besides having to purchase longer wire for the extension, it's virtually free - so why not.
I never found out exactly how much power to the wheels, but not a whole whole lot. I will say that very cheap mods like cutouts (which can be had for as little as $50) and a homemade cold air kit actually do make a significant difference - especially when used with the free mods!
well in that case u can just do the resistor into the IAT and it will do the same thing
can someone point me in the direction of free mods thread for ls1 please?
do a search u will find them no prob
yea but if some1 is goin to half ass it then go for it. me on the other hand aint goin to mess with the IAT
