I'm probably going to sound like a sales schmuck for fuel filters, but I changed mine today on my SS, and holy crap what a difference in performance! It feels like I gained about 50 hp (not to mention it should help my fuel economy with gold...I mean gas pushing over $4.00). I really reccomend it for anyone out there that has a higher mileage car and wants to gain some cheap horsepower gain.
You should change your fuel filter every 10k-15k miles.

Change it every spring. :yup: It's cheap and easy to do.
My Z was hesitating between 2200 and 2600 rpms and after reading some other fuel filter threads here, I changed it and now...no more hesitation. If you don't know when the last time your fuel filter was changed...change it.

is the fuel filter in tank on these cars or is it an inline filter system?
Its in line, about under the drivers seat.
I change mine when I have my transmission fluid and filter done (by my dealer).
I have known some of the guys in the service dept. @ my dealer for twenty years
and they say just what Y2kPewterSS says.
It is often overlooked .

I am a service writer at a dealership, and we recommend a fuel filter change every 30k. But that is about the max you can go IMO. I'm with Preston on this... 10 -15K. It's just cheap insurance for your fuel pump....which is pretty damn expensive to replace.
Is the fuel filter just something I can jack up the car, get underneath it, and see? How do I change it out. I know my monte has an inline and all I have to do is pop the tubes off from each side...

Maybe 50 hp is a bit exagerrated, but I definately felt an improvement in the low end power (an area I was always disappointed in in the past on my car. I always thought LS1's were just like that since I heard they lacked the low end grunt the old LT1's had, but made it up in the higher RPM's). Keep in my mind, my car has close to 70k miles, and it looked like the previous owner failed to replace the filter even once, so I may have noticed a bigger hp gain than someone who keeps up on the maintenance better and changes it every 30-40k miles as most people recommend. Place I went to (Northwest tires) changed it for me for about $60, probably worth the money for those who are'nt mechanicaly inclined (like me!). Just be careful of these chains, after changing the filter the sales guy (and his boss) both tried pushing their $100 b.s. fuel system cleaner package on me after the filter was changed! Ugggh, always with the add-ons!

I just hit 50K on my SS. Going to get the filter this week.
I did mine a few weeks ago with about 80k on the odo I didnt feel any difference, but I know it helps the fuel pump live longer
i just hit 100,000 two days ago. will do fuel filter this week. honestly, im worried its original. ive had my car for 1 year, bought it at 89k miles.
damn i bought mine with 46k and i have 67k on it and i've never done it... argh...
i change my fuel filter once a year, i mean, for under $10 its a real good investment.

i changed my fuel filter about a month ago. went to walmart and bought it for $12-$15 and did myself. its not that hard at all to do but i did rear my car onto some ramps and had no trouble. and yes, UNSCREW THE GAS CAP, or youll get gas squirted all over your face.
From what I've seen, Mopars have the filters in the fuel tank, and aren't serviceable. The newer cars are coming that way. My 2005 GMC Sierra's filter is in the tank, and isn't serviceable.Quote:

Fuel Filter
The fuel filter is contained in the fuel sender assembly inside the fuel tank. the paper filter element of the fuel filter traps particles in the fuel that may damage the fuel injection system. The fuel filter housing is made to withstand maximum fuel system pressure, exposure to fuel additives, and changes in temperature. There is no service interval for fuel filter replacement.

I guess this is an ASAP thing to do...even though I have to say after taking my car from DC to Colombus OH and back I only had to stop for gas 1 time (450 miles one way) I guess I will be able to get more efficiency out of this.

I know its just an extra safety measure, prob not a big deal. But fuel ran out of the line at a pretty steady rate during the whole install. I couldnt hear my pump running, but it wouldnt quit. It took me probably 10 minutes to do the actually swap, and i lost about a half gallon of gas.

ya, I used a FRAM one too. I had either an AC Delco one or the FRAM to choose from, and the FRAM actually looked like it was way higher quality, so I used it.
Don't forget the air filter. It should be replaced every 15K miles, same as the fuel filter.

What's the purpose of disconnecting the battery if the fuel pump is off when the car is off?
