I run Windows 2003 Server on all of my servers.
Windows 2000
well.............................................. ...................
I copied this right from Wikipedia
In computing, a file server is a computer attached to a network that has the primary purpose of providing a location for the shared storage of computer files (such as documents, sound files, photographs, movies, images, databases, et cetera) that can be accessed by the workstations that are attached to the computer network. The term server highlights the role of the machine in the client-server scheme, where the clients are the workstations using the storage. A file server is usually not performing any calculations, and does not run any programs on behalf of the clients. It is designed primarily to enable the rapid storage and retrieval of data where the heavy computation is provided by the workstations.
So basically its a computer that is always on you almost never use it directly but in directly it is used the most.
My server I have the following:
over 90 Gigs of music
300 gigs of movies
50 gigs of pictures
lots and lots of word/how to documents
I hope that helped
LMAO on the wikipedia..
I run Server 2003 on my servers.. not gaining much w/ linux unless you want to learn and play or want something more than just file server.
if you get a decent firewall you can VPN to your house (i have cisco pix, 100-200 on ebay) or you can open remote desktop in your linksys/etc so you can remote desktop from the outside.
Microsoft ISA server then ;)
rather have a small little dinky pix doing the FW then a PC or server with two nic's acting as a FW..
all are pretty secure, so depends what you want to play with
ok all this stuff is greek to me.....any links on how I can get it all set-up ?If its software I need I can get anything I need
