Keep your ebrake up on the first notch. It keeps the headlights from coming on automatically. It doesn't engage the brakes either as long as you keep it on the first notch. The brake light will light up on the gauge cluster.
wow i learned something now...would you know how to do that without the e-brake..like by passing the lil sensor on the dash
thanks a ton :) works perfectly
I asked the same question a little while ago, I'v never tried this, hope it works. A guy on this board sent us all a detailed way to disable the sensor, complete with pics. I'm going to try to post it, if it doesn't work this time, I promise to get posted later. It IS what you're all looking for. It over-rides the factory sensor and gives you complete control to turn them on and off at will. I like to run the driving lights with the running lights due to my headlight covers. It's a cool effect. Again, if this doesn't work, be patient, I'll try again after work.
What the heck, try this...http://members.cox.net/blownls1/drl/drl.html
I F'ing HATE non-defeatable automatic headlights! Good luck.
when i pull my e brake, they stay on.
the car has to be off
so i need to pull the brake while it is off and then start it?
yep
If you guys go to the link I posted it will show you how to disable the auto headlight function completely. Then you won't have to play with your parking brake, you can use it when the car is parked!
tried it last night, worked perfectly. kinda fun to play with. none of the lights turn on until you push the handbrake down. me and my pals were having fun with it. :)
Here is the method I am going to do next week http://www.xse.com/leres/ss/drl.html. Instead of just saudering in a wire, I am going to sauder a wire to each spot on the board, then wire in a switch. This way I can turn the DRL on if I ever have to. This way is very easy cause I've had the radio out and looked at the area where this needs to be done to. Goodluck, or the ebrake always works great!
Is this sensor only in Camaros? I've never seen it before.
I love my automatic lights. haha
i like not having to turn the light on. like having power window. i never have to touch the light knob there fore in look new and never wear out. i like transam to but hate the way they look at night with the light up. i have see them get one eye stuck up look.
All Y'all who like to have automatic headlights probably like automatic transmissions, too, less work to do, eh? J/K!
I think grand prix's have the feature as well.
yes i do have a auto it easier to rest my hand in between the thighs
the c5's dont have them, c6 does tho. all new gms from like 99 1/2 have auto headlights, they are defeatable unlike the camaro :( i just use my brake
why do you guys want to turn off your lights?
Lots of people do it for pictures, have you ever seen your car at dusk when it's not that dark yet with em on? Looks pretty damn sexy. And sometimes you just want em off, or when you are driving up to the gate of a base, it's best if you don't blind the guard. There's lots of reasons.
ya I suppose, I tried finding a way to turn them off too, just because you'd think you would be able to.
For me,...again...I prefer the look of my car with the headlight covers, the whole blacked out theme of my car actually, the windows, front indicator covers, rear tailight covers, the Carbon look emblem on the front bumper, yada yada yada..anyway, I'm getting off track here, I like the look of the headlights OFF and the running lights on, with just the driving lights on. You can't do that unless you have the ability to overide the headlights. I know it's a lot of work to do the dash stuff I posted, but like ANYTHING else we do to (for) our Babies, it's worth it in the end. If you indeed want to have control over the headlights. Other GM cars, like my wife's S10 truck have a overide button right next to the dash dimmer switch, why we didn't get one is beyond me.
It's a control issue. I like to control, not be controlled.
Also, when at a campground, drive in movie theater or similar, driving around with headlights on is considered poor etiquette. (For those who give a F about other people) Also, the Trans Am looks BADASS in this situation, I have done it with ours many times!
Ok man, very easy... take out your stereo headunit. There is a blackbox mounted right behind it. Lift it up and out. You'll see a black and a blue harness connected on top. Disconnect the BLUE harness. Remount the box and put everything back together. You're done.
Mikesomething, is that to disable DRL, or to overide the headlights? Sorry if I'm asking you to repeat yourself, I'm late for work and don't have time to scroll.
thread resurected!!!! i really want to do this but according to one link you need a 10k resistor and the other says just a wire. which is true? are they both true?
I used the 10k resistor. You can get them from Radio Shack for less than $2.00. Works great. No more getting asked if I can turn my headlights off when I get to the gate at Fort Gordon.:D
thanks guys! i gonna go with the resistor cuz i like the DRLs on during the day
i'll hit it up! thanks again
the blue harness mod works in ta's also to disable the amber drl's... just fyi the 99 to 02 gm trucks... hit the dome override button 4 times fast to didsable the autolamps
Good info, but I do not like headlights as DRLs. I really don't like DRLs, but the first time I saw the amber DRLs I thought that was cool. Then found out the F-bodies have ambers for DRL, I thought finally GM did something right. Then saw a TA with the ambers and fog lights on (no headlights) and I was hooked....
i did this yesterday. i used a 10k ohm resistor and it works perfect. at nite time when i put my brake down, just my drls come on! looks sick.
glad i could help
sometimes my lights come on even though my e-brake is all the way up(engaged). anyone have a clue why? i always put my e-brake up before i kill my car.
i took an easier approach... behind the moonsoon, there is the drl module... i just added a little wire, shorting 2 pins... would need to look which ones, since it's been something like 6 years I did it... all intents and purpose, the sensor thinks it has daylight all day/night long.
I did it this way: http://www.xse.com/leres/ss/drl.html
but instead of soldering on the board, i just put a wire between the 2 conections
Check to see if your parking brake reminder light is on on the dash when you pull up the parking brake. I've noticed lately that mine does not always come on when I pull mine, and if the car is idling, the BCM won't let me pop the hatch unless it thinks the parking brake is set. I bet it is the same for the headlights. My DRLs won't stay off unless I start the car first with the park brake set, and only then if it knows it is set.
