dog got mauled

I have a 13 year old chow mix. He looks pretty much like a black chow. I've had him since he was just a couple months old so me and him have been through a ton together. I was getting ready to leave for work this afternoon and they were outside. I have a couple acres and there are woods all the way around me with only 1 house near me. I hear my younger dog start barking which is really rare. He hardly ever barks. My wife looks out back and says " There's 2 other dogs in the yard". I look out back and see my older dog walking towards the house and there's 2 white ones walking behind him. He didn't look right to me so I stepped outside and the 2 white dogs stopped and started walking away. When he got closer to the house I see he's really bloody and notice the 2 white dogs were pitbulls. I run in and grab the shotgun and head out into the woods to find them. I see them down in a ravine working there way to my right so I slip over a ways and run to get in front of them. They came out about 30 yards directly in front of me and I blasted one of the bitches with a 3.5" nitromag 4 shot turkey load. I knocked his ass off his feet and peppered the other dog because she was standing just in front of him. He rolled back down in the ravine and got back up and was yelping and running out of the ravine but by the time he got to the top he wasn't doing so well. I hope the possum's are eating his ass right now. My dog was tore all to hell. He's overnight at the vet right now. They shaved him down and said he has bite marks all over his body, his one ear is really tore up, and he has puncture bites under his armpit. He'll make it but he's to old to be having that happen to him. 9-10 years ago and he'd put up a helluva fight but nowadays he does good walking around due to bad hips.
I found out tonight from someone where I think those dogs live. They had collars on. I'm gonna scope it out and see what their fence situation looks like then I'm gonna toss a couple handfulls of cut up hot dog with bluegill hooks in them to take care of the other dog.

I have nothing against pits. I've owned a few. After I shot the first one the second one was long gone so no chance for a follow up. She dropped off into that ravine and got out of range. It's amazing they didn't kill my dog. He's just so old he can't defend himself. We get strays from time to time that come into the yard but have never had a problem with them until now. I'm just glad the kids weren't outside although the dogs seemed to be scared of me so I doubt they would've jumped on the kids and the kids are never outside unsupervised. My wife or I always go out with them.

just saying good job on protecting your rights!!! ...dogs came onto YOUR property and attacked your dog...i woulda shot them as well.....owners of potentionaly dangerous dogs should keep there dogs ON there property or be prepared to face the consequences when they attack somone or somone else pet

sucks man, but im glad your dog will be ok. my girl is a VET and she called me in one evening to show me a dog that was in a dog fight. it had puncture wounds/bite marks and had to be stitched up. it was a not a pretty sight but that dog made it through. it's sad.

Dog prob wont be back if you wounded it. Hopefully you did enough damage it dies so you do not have a wounded creature that gets walked up on by some person and the thing goes nuts.

Very sorry about your dog atleast you got outside in time.

Even though it was a '3.5" nitromag 4 shot' pitty's are really tough and it could have lived!

If it is injured it could be a danger to even young humans in your area.

You should continue to track them as some child could be hurt from whart your 'turkey load' started.

You should of finished the job prior to posting!

I hope the chow is not changed by this attack.

One time my sister's PIT, flipped and just tore into my Beagle. Ripped its leg almost off and had to get surgery. PITS have split personalities! Which is why I had to put it down

I've had pitbulls in the past. I know the breed very well and they're not a bad breed of dog but you can't raise them like you would a poodle. They get a bad rep for what the owners do. I have no worries about that dog hurting someone. By the time he was up that ravine he was in bad shape. There's zero doubt in my mind he lived another 15 minutes. Getting hit at 30 yards with a 3.5" magnum will kill pretty much anything. I'm surprised he made it that far.
I talked to the vet this morning and they want to keep my dog another night. He's not eating and is really sore which is understandable. Plus I figure they're riding the cash cow a little bit but it's like my child. If they say he needs to stay then that's what'll happen.

Went through the overnight vet visit with Tank a few years back.
Got bit through a fence while he was being walked.
Fucking animal control did NOTHING about it. Said it was as much Tanks fault as the other dogs. $600 later he was patched up....
Then animal control had the nerve to stop by my house and bitch at me about my fence having enough of a hole for a paw to stick through. The lady ended up calling the police to assist her since I was being difficult. :lol:

while a completely valid statement, there is no room for dogs that would do something like that to be living near children. i would have killed the dogs and taken the collars to the owner.

That sucks, hope your dog isnt too bad! My lab is my best friend and a dog attacked him a few weeks back, part pit and something I believe, 100lbs plus, she locked on to my dogs nexk face... I flipped and tackled her ass and almost rip her jaw apart to get her off my dog. Its a friendly dog, no idea why it did it, but I was close to killing her right there! So I know how you feel and I would have chased them down til I knew they were dead!

Now I know plenty of people with pits, gentle dogs, however just so many stories of attacks. I cant believe these dogs are all raised bad. I think its just in the dogs nature, sure some are the friendliest dogs ever, but not a dog I'll ever own.

A cat even latched onto my dog once, he thought it was one of ours... well that cat died that day!

I could barely read that without getting upset. I have a little dog and love him like a child. If that ever happened I'm sure I'd have done the same thing as you Orion.

If it was my dog and we were buddies for that length of time, instead of jus doing what Orion did, I would have left the 2 carcasses on the owners front porch along with a love letter from the lawyer. I think thats sweet that he went in got his shotgun and blasted that dog.

F-that, I would have continued hunting, at that point to me, free game. I wouldnt have even bothered telling the owners, f-them let them figure it out....they should have been looking by then anyway. I have a14 week old great dane, at this point(I also live in the city) if a dog attacked mine, it would be dead. Dont care, you reacted accordingly, unlike you though, I would have been using my 308 to complete the job.

Even though i hate any form of violence towards any animal (even though i love eating them), i dont think he was wrong here... if something attacked my short haired english pointer i would prbably do the same, but i would have preferred you went with a 2'1/4" sabot slug to the head, to ill it instantly and not leave it wondering around in pain and anger.

we usd to live on the outskirts of town and had dogs botherin ours all the time, once my dad stepped out the back door with his bow and an old flu flu arrow like ya use to shoot birds in air with, he figured it would just bounce off in stuck in it and it ran all the away across town yippin, we never seen it again, no several others, usually a .22 to the head works, other times we used a highpower, but it sucks gettin rid of the dead ones, we probably had to deal with at least one a year, dad talked to the mayor and he said if it didnt have a coloar it was free game soo...

Now we live out in the country and have coons and coyotes that bother her and we use a shotgun on them, 3 inch steel 4 shot

but back on topic I feel the same way, If someone elses dog enters my property it fair game, we may let it go if it aint botherin nothin otherwise its dead.

I'm a dog person, always have been. I've owned pits, rotts, mutts, hounds, and just about every mix you can think of. That's the first dog I've ever shot. If at all possible I try not to shoot any animal unless I'm hunting. I felt in this case it was justified because they tried to kill my dog and I have another younger dog that they would've killed if they had the chance. His wounds were beyond just a dog fight. I've seen many many dogs fight and these types of wounds were beyond just asserting dominance. I know pits and I know how powerful they are. I had a bruiser pit when I was in high school. Strongest dog I've ever been around except for maybe my rott but the rott had a good 50#'s on my pit. There's been a few mutts through here that have tangled with my dog but it's usually just a dominance thing and as soon as one backs down the fight is over. My dog has wounds all over his body for the most part and several in the face and head area. He's still at the vet tonight but I'm hoping we can bring him home tommorrow.

Sorry to hear about your dog.....but I'm glad he's gonna make it. I own a male pit and he's the nicest dog ever, but like people there are always gonna be some bad apples. If he or my female rotti were ever attacked like that I'd handle things similarly to the way you did, except I'd use a bat to make it a little more personal. LOL

Pits by nature are people friendly and animal aggressive. It's in their blood......and is why them as well as all dogs should be kept on leash and fenced in so they don't get onto other's properties.

Orion, I am very sorry to hear about your dog ... Have had many dogs in the past, its easy to get attached. With the length of time you've had with yours, I thank God that he's ok .. I would have :uzi: those two dogs dead, they shouldnt have been on ur property. People need to take extra care when they have pits.

Thanks, I appreciate it. The same goes to everyone else that posted here too. I guess he would be doing 50/50 at this point. I saw some decent improvements from him Thurs. and Fri. but the last 2 days he hasn't really improved much and he's not eating very much although he is eating a little. I think about how I feel when I'm hurt or sick. I don't feel like doing anything either so hopefully once the soreness is completely gone he'll start getting back to his old ways of sleeping all damn day..... :D He does Tuesday for surgery on his ear to get rid of the dead stuff. Hopefully that'll improve the smell.....that dog stinks. At 13 he just stunk anyway but it's a special dead flesh kind of stink right now. I just put a little vicks under my nose and go in when I clean out that ear 2-3 times a day.

turkey shells were all I had near the shotgun. I would've much rather had deer slugs handy. I don't know where the owners live. Still don't. I've owned pits myself and ignorant/irresponsible pit owners that don't contain their dog are way more pathetic than someone destroying a dog that just mauled their dog on their property. My beef is with the owners if I ever find them but at the time the dogs needed dealt with first. I've owned 3 different pits in my life. Do you know how many of them ever got loose and attacked anything? Zero. I have nothing against owning the breed but if you do own the breed it comes with certain responsibilities that other breed owners don't have. Control and containment are the 2 most important. These owners definitely lack the responsibility for the latter of those 2 and don't deserve to own the breed.

now, please dont ask me to elaborate on this. but antifreeze in the food has been known to take care of the bully dogs on the block...if you smells what im cookin. (not me...i know a guy, and if i posted a pic you might get him confused with the dog).

anyway, this guy is off his rocker and he told me he did this to the neighbors dog. he lives in st. louis city, off arsenal, past the brewery. he's the only white guy in the "neighborhood". if anyone knows what im saying, then they know that the neighbors took the passing of their dogs with the smiling faces. lets just say that at 5'9'', 300 lbs with 24 inch arms, this guy looks more like a built shrek than a guy.
still, antifreeze in the food is alittle harsh. i like Orions covert attitude on this matter.

Good for you, I would do the same god damn thing. Only I would tranquilize the dogs and torture them, taking pictures as I went along to mail to the owners. Sounds like the shotty needs to be exchanged for one of these. That Pit would have laid down right where he got shot. Then when the owner comes for you you will more than likely out gun him unless he is Tank Johnson.

If he dies then you should find who owns those dogs, kill the other dog or both if the one you hit lived, then kill their new dogs after a while.

Exactly. This breed is dangerous because even the nicest dogs simply flip out and go postal for no apparent reason. Yet, stupid people still own them. Oh well, maybe if their dogs keep getting slaughtered by pissed off NRA members they will decide on a Lab or a Beagle or something.

His beef should be and IS with the dogs AND the owners. I wonder if he has found them yet?

Not yet. Went driving around looking for them but no luck yet. There's a little country grocery store/gas station up the road. I talked to the owner about it and he said I could put a posting up in there to try and get some information.
My dog had his first surgery today. They removed an ear and took part of his scalp. They installed 3 drain tubes in his back to try and drain off the fluid that's collecting beneath the skin. The vet seems pretty optimistic about him making it because he's still fighting and hasn't given up yet. She said most dogs that are in his shape would've already given up so he's a fighter. She may also be saying that to help make me feel better but we'll see. I came home last night and he was waiting on me at the door with his tail wagging so he's still somewhat there. After that though he just lays in 1 spot most of the time. We go pick him up tomorrow then in 2-3 days we're taking him back so they can see how he's progressing and decide when they want to do the next operation. I'm going tomorrow to buy some hamburger, steaks, and vanilla ice cream. He's going to eat like a king this week just in case he makes a turn for the worse. He can eat the shit out of some vanilla ice cream. :D He also loves pickle loaf so he'll be getting some of that too.
