I have blown my front speakers in my 2002 SS convertible. Does anyone have any suggestions for some good replacements? They are 6 1/2 inch round speakers, but they are 2 ohm and have 4 wires, 2 for each voice coil, which doesn't seem very common. Thanks in advance.

honestly i don't remember, mine wansn't monsoon equipped.
Infinity Kappa's 72i's are direct 2 ohm replacement speakers. that's what i replaced my door speakers with since they were blown. less than $100 dollars and you do nt tuse the cross over that comes with them. just splice the wires and connect the highs to highs and lows to lows. it's easy and doesn't take long to swap out...
Must be a common problem,,,my 02 SS convertable also had blown front speakers, both were replaced under warranty a couple years ago.
OK, so it sounds like the best replacements are the Infinity Kappa 72is; just cut the wires and splice in without using the crossovers. I was looking at the Infinity web site under the Kappa series http://www.infinitysystems.com/car/p...aspx?SerId=KAP but couldn't figure out which ones they are. Has anyone bought these lately? Are the 62.7Is the same as the 72is? Thanks.
same happened to me in my 2000 z28 a4... it actually is a common problem..especially monsoon stereos... the speaker couldnt handle the power...ac delco came out with a factory replacement that can handle the power and at a very good price!!!! i got mine on ebay... it was an ebay store and the name was......thepartsladi.... everything worked out great
OK, it sounds like the OEM speakers are a solution as are the Infinity Kappa speakers. I looked on the Infinity website but didn't see 72is - is this an old model. There is a KAPPA62.7I that is a 6 1/2 " two-way speaker. Does this sound like the 72i? Thanks.

You should check with www.Crutchfield.com They have direct replacement speakers, customer ratings/feedback, factory adapter harnesses, and installation guides, all at no extra cost. I've bought a lot of stuff from them, they have good prices, and great customer service.
Sometimes their prices are decent......not usually - rarely actually. All the extra stuff is nice, but also unnecessary. Customer service there is awesome as well. However, you pay enough that all that stuff.....and it's definitely not worth it unless you have money to throw away. I order almost everything from SonicElectronix.com -- for example the 62.7i's we're talking about here are $150 from Crutchfield Vs. $100 from SonicElectronix.....Quote:

Can you hook up 4 wires to the Infinitys or the Polks? I am with FirebirdJones, on this car I can but don't want to cut the wires. I bet either sounds a lot better than the Delcos, but using the factory wires is a big plus. I have yet to see any Delco speakers that were worth a s*&^.
You know the factory system sounded pretty darn good until they gave up the ghost. Plus I think my 2nd 100K miles will take like 5 times longer than the 1st so they should last me.
Ya, I never turn it up loud enough to hurt anything anyway, even with the top down. They were blown from the previous original owner and I got some paperwork showing replacement under warranty,,,both door speakers.
I always adjust the sound more towards the larger speakers as well to take the strain off of the smaller ones.
I'm old, and don't care for loud radios anyway, I grew up before all this booming stuff came into play. I am pretty confident my factory GM speakers will last my lifetime. It only needs to be loud enough to hear it,,,for me that is. Larry.
I hear you, I sort of made that transition since I got the car in early 01. Was single then, turned it a little too loud sometimes now I'm married with two kids and much more mellow. REO Speedwagon don't need to be at full volume to pump me up(-: Rollin with the changes:yup:
LOL,,,ya marrage and kids will do that to ya :yup: but thats okay with me, I needed someone to calm me down from my younger trouble making days,,,,lol.
OK, I bought the OEM speakers - as soon as I get them I will let everyone know how they worked out. Thanks for the suggestions.

The point of the thread was to find some quality replacements, which I hope happened with someone referring me to the seller of the upgraded OEM speakers on EBay. Also, we discussed cutting vs. not cutting wires, which was one of the major things that led me to buy these. The thread helped me - I hope everyone else didn't find it a waste of time. Thanks again to everyone.

It claims that the "high power" of the Monsoon system destroys the speakers...it was not the massive power or anything it produces....just the fact that the speakers build quality was really cheap and the HU distortion is really bad...combine that with regualr playing at high volumes... I wonder if they improved the build quality, or what.. I doubt it's anything dramatic -- hope they work out for ya though..
Maybe some of us shouldn't be turning up the radio so damn loud,,,lol. I actually find the factory speakers very satisfactory for myself and my family. Like I discussed with someone on here before, once you are married with kids, you kinda outgrow that loud stereo stuff anyway...
I would rather spend my money nowadays to make the car go faster anyway :yup:

I will compare them to the original OEM speakers when I get them in a few days and will post what I find so that everyone will know whether they are worth getting or not.

Ok I should be more clear -- I have NOTHING against how Monsoon speakers sound! Actually, I haven't even tampered with anything in this car besides a new HU and amp/sub setup, and they ARE comparable to the system I have put in my bro's Camaro (maybe partly because I don't play mine loud often at all and the previous owner was a cop who probably didn't either so they're in good condition). The reason factory speakers suck is, as mentioned, because they blow out so easily due to a combination of the cheap build quality (particularly the cone/suspension area, not sure how VCs are) and add volume and distortion put out by the factory HU to that and there ya go... All of my friends who play music at a decent volume have replaced their speakers - I have not, and I give credit to my HU. Through experience of others as well, a new HU will reduce the amount of blown speakers dramatically (the volume part can still kill them/etc.).
I had to replace one & later the other front speaker not long after I bought my 02 Z vert. So I figured the original owner probably played the monsoon pretty loud. But the parts numbers you listed are the same as the replacement speakers I purchased from the local Chevy dealer and they really sound great. They've been in the car now for over a year & really sound outstanding.Plus the dealer has a 12 month warranty, I notice the warranty on the E-BAY replacements are covered for 2 years & they are $14.00 cheaper for the pair. Folks I don't know about you but my MONSOON sounds terrific.I've had a lot of car stereo's and some were pretty high dollar with big RMS amps & extremely low THD and none sounded better than my MONSOON.
Previously I had a couple with a Monsoon that sounded WAY better than my convertible that I have now. If I remember correctly, I think there were more/different speakers in the couple. I thought it sounded great but was never very impressed with the sound in the convertible.

I just bought a SS which came with the Monsoon system, and CD changer (according to the RPO codes), but doesn't have the Monsoon logo on the faceplate, and there isn't a CD changer. I'm assuming the head unit was replaced with a regular CD/radio. I'd like to get the factory system back to original. Because it's a 2000 Arctic White SS Vert., with Black top, Leather int. So I think it's worth keeping original.
Any help would be greatly appreciated,

You will see a threaded stud on one end, and another piece of sheetmetal sticking up on the other end with a hole in it. As far as the head unit is concerned,,,,on my 02 with the monsoon stereo, the word "monsoon" is actually engraved into the face of the head unit.
Not sure who had problems with distortion on the factory head units but I think mine sounds absolutely great, one of the best sounding factory systems I have heard to date. Mine is a convertable too, so it has the monsoon head unit but it doesn't come with the monsoon style speakers with extra tweaters and such,,,,but I find the sound quality excellent still even with the more common "standard" speakers.
I also like the ease of operation of the factory head unit, with large easy to read buttons (great for old guys like me) I can't really stand the new stereos made nowadays, it seems their idea is to make the radio as small as possible and then cram as many buttons as they can on the face of it:ahh: and the manual to work the thing is thicker than the car manual:eeek: I'll pass on that.
Hey does anyone know when GM came out with new updated replacement speakers? Since mine were replaced under warranty and I have the paperwork I might check for the date of replacement. Larry.
The bottom line - I bought the "factory upgrades" from thepartsladi store on Ebay. They came today and I put them in. They look just like the factory speakers so the wires plug right in and they go in with 3 screws in the factory holes so installation is a piece of cake. To me, they look and sound exactly like the factory speakers, so they will probably blow again at some point. Then I will probably buy the Infinitys. On the web site they say that they are better than the factory speakers but they look exactly the same to me. Maybe the price is better than the dealer though - $70 + $7 shipping for both.

Yes, they looked to me like paper and foam rubber. If these are upgraded, I can't tell the difference. I hoped that they would be constructed better than the old ones, but I don't think that's the case.
Well, most all factory speakers are made of materials that degrade over time. This may or may not hurt the reproduction of sound in the early stages. Of course the cone material is probably the same (nothing wrong with that really) and the suspension is still more foam than anything (can't expect anything better from factory speakers....plus - they aren't getting all that much power). I wonder though if anything with the voice coil structure itself has been improved at least in some very slight way. The changes might not be physically visible (obviously since you can't visually see a blown speaker without dissecting it -- you can see material degradation, etc.).Quote:

No1 said that you cant run 4 ohms speakers -- rather than a Best Buy (no offense to the above poster), I would definitely find a knowledgeable friend, audio shop, or here of the forums if you want advice. Just never buy audio equip. from Best Buy, or shops unless then have some incredible deals -- shop around/online first for better prices and you will probably never end up at Best Buy.Quote:

IMO, BB best for warranty work if someone does not know what they are doing. If I were to choose between the larger retailer shops, I would put BB at the top -- just not as far as value. Also does depend on your particular store I guess -- I've just been disgusted by the problems I have seen from people that claim to have taken their car to CCity, BB, etc.Quote:

Or you can do like I did. I asked the knowledgeable people that hang out in this forum about what equipment options there are (they all actually have Camaros and/or Firebirds) and where is a good place to get it so you can make an informed purchase wherever you buy from. That is especially true in my case, because virtually none of the vendors that I contacted knew that my Camaro had 2 ohm speakers with 2 voice coils and 4 leads, but lots of people here did.
