How to light up the front plate of the Firebird

How to light up the front plate of your Firebird Trans Am

Materials list
1. Afterthoughts clear plate
2.Bird Decal for cover
3.Dish soap (Dawn or Joy)
4.Automotive Prep All (degreaser)
5.sanding sponge or 400 grit paper
6.Adhesive promoter
7. Flexible primer
8.Primer sealer
9.Painters masking tape (2”-3” works best)
10.razor
11.Your automotive paint color base coat
(some paint Jobbers are able to mix your color in an aerosol can, other wise a pint of base coat)
* *You can skip material #12 if you purchase single stage paint
12.clear coat/ hardener (If good with a can you may use aerosol clears)
13.Dual 12” Cold Cathodes
14.15‘ of wire (Thick gauge speaker wire works good)

Start of with your plate, warm water and dish detergent. Wash till becomes sqeaky, then allow to air dry in the sun. Next is to lightly sand the surface that will be painted (not the bird) just enough to clould the surface.

Now you with tape up the bird from the outside, careful to press down firmly and to cover the bird fully. Using the razor trim around the bird as to leave just enough to cover the depth of the bird. (if you choose to only cover the top of the bird and not the sides the light will only pass through the decal here is light through and sides)
http://pic1.picbin.net/direct/fdwbg0s.jpg
so however you want it to look.

Now is time to use the Prep all with a lint free towel. Next is to use an adhesive promoter, I used the aerosol can because it's quicker and less expensive then mixing it up for the paint gun.
http://pic1.picbin.net/direct/u2rirqp.jpg
With that becoming tacky, spray your first coat of flexible primer on, lite coats works best if using a can to build up because its less sanding. After the primer dries lightly sand any burrs or imperfections, then use a primer sealer which will bring fourth more color for a better match of the paint.(sand again if needed)
Rear shot
http://pic1.picbin.net/direct/1l6ny0t.jpg

Now it's paint time, some paint jobbers are able to put your paint in an aerosol can for you other wise you will need a paint gun. Spary down your color (bird still taped) sand if needed. Remove the tape from the bird after paint has dried, check for any over spray or rough edges. they can be cleaned off with the razor.Once happy with the way it will look clear coat it.
Again two choices for clear aerosol of high quality works great it needs to have this tip for best application.
http://pic1.picbin.net/direct/nxnl4iz.jpg
Now install your decal..... finished
http://pic1.picbin.net/direct/2lrw5za.jpg

Time for lights take your cathodes mounth them and the box behind the plate going horizontal, for best light displacement This much space will give full light coverage.

http://pic1.picbin.net/direct/ciltyru.jpg
Feed the line through the drivers side hole that supports the plate. (I used thick speaker wire beacuse it's together to be easier to manuver plus little current will pass through it anyways.

http://pic1.picbin.net/direct/idoywkb.jpg

From there go to your drivers side head light, you will have to remove 2-3 push locks to get the bumper cover loose to reach http://pic1.picbin.net/direct/4jnophq.jpg
http://pic1.picbin.net/direct/0si2ume.jpg
With the lights up and cover loose reach in and catch the line you feeed earlier and pull out. Now route them where ever you are to draw power ( fog lights toggle switch, ect.) I used the armed line for Nitrous so when armed i'm lit.

FOGLIGHT METHOD
To wire in to the foglight run your ground ( somewhere near radiator is good)
Now we have 2 options
1st you can splice in one of the purple lines feeding a foglight, crimp tight and use black tape to weather seal.

2nd use a paper clip sliding it down the front of the plug. this will release the wire from the plug. Now with the purple line out strip you power for the plate and attach to the foglights end. Reinsert the end and plug clip back to foglight.

If using cold cathodes or leds the voltage interferance will not be enough to affect the fuse with this method

Install plate check for light displacement and enjoy :)

Another thing that I have added will get some pics up.

went to home depot and bought some 20 gauge steeel. cut it small enough to fit behind the plate and attached with double sided tape.
This allows all light that is shinning back from the cathode to reflect foward for a brighter apperance.

is there a way to power the light from the DRL's? I have after market foglights that are mounted on a fabricated piece of metal. I dont' have any purple wires running to them, i just have a black and white wire to each fog.

The drl's are much more accessable though.

I've seen them on ebay, but for an what I thought was an outlandish $100. Is that a reasonable cost? How much do ya have invested in it?

i spent 50 on the plate, 30 on LEDs( lighting), plus paint and time. So think about that, I say 100 is cheap.

Here is some help for those of you wanting to wire the lights to your Fogs:

DISCONNECT POSITIVE BATTERY TERMINAL BEFORE CONTINUING

Start by locating the fuse box with the fog lights.

Remove the box by inserting a flat-head into the back of it and gently prying it away from the nub.

PUSH! PUUUUUSSHHH! Using speaker wire, positive to the red inverter wire and negative to the black then shove the speaker wire into the middle bird-panel anchor slot. I bent the wire just a bit so that it would follow the styrofoam bumper behind it and not get hung up. I suggest pulling out the plastic push-bolt that keeps the top of the bumper cover anchored [not shown]. It's located just infront of the hood latch. This way you can bend the bumper cover forward some to catch the wire earlier.

expose the wires of the fuse box and locate the purple one for fogs; you can cut away some purple insulation [DO NOT CUT THROUGH THE WIRE] so that you can splice in the positive cable run from the cathode's inverter.

Anchor your ground and your positive as shown-use electrical tape to seal the splice in the purple wire.

Bolt it all back up and your good. I sticky-taped my cathodes and the inverter to the back of the clear plate.

How did you wire them up? Did you splice them up with your fog lights cause your cathodes were lit without them being on? Where would you get a power source for so many lights without damaging your power source? :thinkin:

I have an independant power source from the fuse box inside. I wired from the one marked battery 30 amp fuse, to power my nitrous kits. From this line I power the bird,so when the bird is lit the kit is armed.
My nitrous kits, nitrous gauge lights and bird is on one line.

what can i do to get this independant power source? just get that 30amp fuse? and if so how and when will the bird light up whenever the car starts or would i need to get a switch?

I have silver star fog lights and hyper whites in my turn signals and side markers. I have some lite blue covers for fog and turn signal from fbody enhancements they look good when I have them on.

They have a glare thats off color from everything else but they still match up well.

Just review this thread and it tells you all that you need. basically, masking tape, a clear plate from afterthoughtsauto.com and the cathode light kit can be bought from xioxide.com. I had a body shop paint mine after I masked it and it came out great-just make sure to ask them to remove the tape before clear coating so that it seals the edges.

the cathode set comes with 2...i think 4 would do it if you're just outlining the bird, but in Burn's case, you can see through his bird, so he put 8 in

I got your pm and checked the tracking number, i think it said it was bearly leaving your location...

Yeah that's kinda what i was thinking just getting 4 and placing them well spaced out throughout the bird so i can get good lighting on the outline!
How many did you have and.... I was thinking what do you think of having the whole bird light up instead of the outline, would it be a pain in the butt to do that since you can only see through the outline?

^ yeah VA sucks. Cops aren't out to uphold the law anymore, they're roving tax collectors. easiest way to collects make everything illegal. you hear bout the 1,000 dollar a year for 3 year fines? they're out for blood

Great! It has only gotten a few chips even though it is a weekend car.

It would be A LOT easier if you just bought candy paint of the color of your car and bought some regular paint.

Put the bird decal on after scuffing the clear plate... paint with regular gm paint.. then peel the decal and paint with clear. It will be invisible in the day and badass at night.

look through this thread for the howto on the light up kit. Runn hasn't logged on this site in a few months at best, he's got his own homepage that tells you all his secrets though: http://www.ws7.se/

At this time I cannot say b/c we are working out exclusive pricing with afterthoughts. we want to offer a complete kit, lights/painted plate/shipping as a one stop shop.

When I did mine long ago I had to make my own led panels, but then went cold cathode for better light displacement.

You'll need 2 kits (total of 4 tubes Cathodes):
http://www.xoxide.com/coldcathodes.html Just remember to cut the computer lead from the inverter, b/c the inverter is all you need:

cops never gave me any issues, it's hardly that bright.
