Today is Processor Change Day

Okay, so I'm upgrading from an Intel 2.8/ 1M / 800 FSB to 3.2/ 1M / 800 FSB on an Intel 865GLC MOBO

Nice!

So we get the processor in, artic silver 6 all, attach the Thermalright XP120 heatsink w/ Panaflo 120 x 28mm Fan (badboy cooling here) and boot up.

Everying is cool but why am I not getting the respectable blazing speed I had anticipated?
Well damn.

I've adjusted all the performance parameters in XP and this goes on for a week and I'm pissed !!!!!!

Alas you big dummy check your bios !!!!!!

Okay so we open the case and move the boot pin on the MOBO over to boot into bios mode and check it out.
Well damn ... there's my problem.
Sure enough we're reading the processor as 3.2 and the memory of 1G.

As I move over to memory parameters I'm still on 333mhz !!!!!
Well damn.

Okay so we open the memory parameters and bam thiers my 400mhz. DDR2 of course.
I then run auto define and sure as shit the mobo goes right into 6-2-2-2, a boost up from its max 5-2-2-2 latency and this tells me that all my shit is perfect.

Oh, and for the hell of it I check the parameters of my ASYLUM 5900 video card and another damn misadjutment.
I'm on 64mb when I need to be at 128mb. Bam adjustment is made.

We check all the rest of the parameters then F10 to save and close.

We move the MOBO pin back, close the case and re boot.

I SAID DAMN !!!!! I'm once again King of the CPU GeekWorld !!!!!!

Today lets re-cap on how to allow Windows XP to improve your memorys' perfromance.

Right click on My Computer
Click Properties
Click Advanced

Under Performance click settings
Click the Advanced Tab

Go to Virtual Memory and click change

Under Custom size you will see Inititial size and Maximum size
Your maximum size will be about twice that of initial size (which is the recommended in the box below under Total paging file size for all drives)

Click the Custom Size Button and change your initial size number to that of the maximum size.
In my case it is 3072, so now I have the value 3072 in both boxes

Click ok ... and click ok all the way back out.

You should get a reboot message from XP to set changes.

Reboot

Now you're blazing !!!!!

No there is no reason not to do this.
XP as a superior artificial intelligence by default has determined that your current settings suffice in accordance with your hardrive caching and for windows operability.

It wants to perform better .. if you tell it too.

By default your memory is losing quite a bit of performance and it too will perform any way you ... tell it to do.

This new setting is a type of overclocking that is safe.
For Intel it's about all you can do.
Intel MOBO's by default allow a bit more performance for memory latency when using auto and user defined.
However you can seriously damage your stuff if you try ridiculously high settings in the bios .. which is not possible for Intel.

All other MOBO's such as the athlon based mobo's allow for serious overclocking (bios settings) and this is cool if you understand how high and how hot and for how long until your components blowup.

Nobody stays way overclocked for too long.
They only do it for ceiling parameters and then back off.
Gamers usually encounter problems because of the need for speed.
Usually a shutdown and pray for a re-start.

Here with these new settings, you can set them and forget it.

More clarification to come in XP performance parameters ..

Today lets re-cap on the wonderful world of msconfig in the Windows XP OS.
click start
click run
type msconfig then ok
click the startup tab

see all those boxes with checks in them?

Those are all the programs that windows xp is executing every second.
This means you are in system slowdown and theres not really a damn thing you can do about it other than spend some big bucks on some big memory.

But we can help windows out by stopping some of these executing programs by unchecking some boxes.

Most of these programs don't need to be running until you tell it too by clicking on any of your favorite program icons. By the way Windows XP hates icons on your desktop.

Uncheck anything that says Adobe, like a adobe gamma loader. Go ahead and uncheck anything that looks suspicious.

Do not uncheck your antivirus programs like Norton identified by Symantec, nor McAfee. If you're using McAfee you're already running a little slower because this program is in a constant state of executing.

If you can't tell what you're unchecking, move your mouse cursor over to the vertical line under command and move it to the right to expand the program so you can see what it is.

Their is a lot of crappy stuff running in the background and you can safely check and uncheck stuff depending on your desire.

All done?

Now click apply then click ok.

Windows will now message you to *exit and restart*, so go ahead.

Dum dee Dum

Back on desktop?

Go ahead and click *do not show this message again.*

You should be getting some additional blaze now.

If you don't like the new settings go ahead and go back into msconfig and play around some more.

not much else you can do to boost performance other than the page file and removing everything you dont need from the startup via the registry if its not all in msconfig

goto start, run, type msconfig now goto startup tab and disable all. if you have problems with popus and spyware you can get adaware and spybot search and destroy from downloads.com

MadSeason is kind of right and kind of wrong.
More of *kind of rough around the edges.*

As we explore msconfig some more you'll understand that windows xp as an artificial intelligence can be easily lobotimized if not careful.

For instance, do not go into startup and uncheck everything.
Some programs that stop running will in turn affect other programs on and on.
Your Norton Anti-virus will be the first to corrupt and in about a week you'll start having stall problems in programs and in your OS because the dll's will fail to negotiate ... thats just for starts.

Second, if you are going to use a spyware, only use Ad-Aware SE.
All other spyware removal act as THEEE spyware now on your computer and act as a mild virus mainly because they are cheap programs that do nothing but conflict.
They replace and remove critical keys in the reg and the only way to remedy is to reinstall windows unless you know your regedit and this turns out to nothing more than a pain in the ass and waste of time.

Click the Services tab
This the Windows XP artifical intelligence.
Every service is intertwined with every service.
This hosts the thought process's in XP just like neurons and axions firing off in your head.

Click Administrative Tools
Click Computer Management
Click Services and Applications

You can go ahead and right click on something and click properties and study the properties and this will give you an idea of the beauty of XP.

If this is the case back off on your Initial value size until you are stable. Remember that you are trying to allow XP to find its balance with your system components.

For instance, If you are using an 8mb cache PATA (IDE) hardrive you can back the value a bit more.

Remember now that heat causes component expansions and kills performance.
Remove your case cover and touch your HD to see how warm it is.
Wear an anti-static device while doing this or make sure you are wearing a rubber sole shoe.

Now, the new 16mb cache HD's are very fast and you may need to leave the initial value at its original size. This is important because the 16mb drive runs very hot and thus it would be running even hotter.
With SATA drives you may lower the value even lower if needed.

Todays HD's require their own cooling.
I'm still using an old Maxtor 6E040L0 DiamondMax 8 40g 2mb just beacuse its noiseless and I've got an 80mm Antec directly underneath it as it was getting fairly warm with the new settings.

As of the moment I'm waiting for my WDJS 80G SATA to get here so I'll post the results.

Madseason also has an important point.
Do a defrag then a Windows diskcheck.
First do a diagnostics with either MAXBLAST or Data Lifegaurd (WD)
This is important as no HD is perfect and almost all have bad sectors etc, that need to be reapaired,

We will be discussing single, dual and quad core processors in the near future as they relate to info seeking and performance.

Go ahead and unplug the power cord from your power supply to modem from the modem.
Wait about 2-3 minutes.

In the meantime, go to the top of your browser toolbar and click tools
Click Internet Options
Click the advanced tab

Scroll down and and put a check in Use HTTP 1 through proxy connections.
Scroll down some more and put a check in Empty Temporary Internet Files when Browser is closed

Scroll down a little more and put a check in Use TLS 1.0

Click apply then ok back out.

Connect your power to modem and wait for detection.
You can view the detection to see the ISP speed.

You've just cleaned your cache which causes browser slowdown and introduced a higer speed if your ISP has done this.

Your browser now also deletes all those crappy browser quarks everytime you close your browser.
Now when you do a disk clean they won't be there thus increasing your disk clean time.

This is also how you reset for increased speed when your ISP has increased its speed.

so, i'm feeding off of a neighbors wireless, this will still apply to my connection? just unplug the wireless adapter, and do what you said, and it will speed up. even though it should all be off of his settings? or is it?

and how do i make the Piece that we use at work go faster? there's about 5-6 people that use it, all with different log in's and we have no "admin" access to it. the gurus came in and wipped everything out, supposively made it "better" and every day, i wanna throw this damn thing over the work counter.

what's the deal with my computer? I've never had any issues before. I have an Emachines desktop. Amd processor 1.8ghz. 2g memory with 80gb hdd. a couple days ago, something happened. i don't know if it got a virus or what. but my wireless stopped working. and when i would plug it in, the computer would say the device is malfunctioning. then i would plug it into the laptop, and there was no problems.

i couldn't figure it out, so i just did a whole system restore. not a big deal, since i have everything backed up on an external harddrive.

it took forever to get the settings back like they were, graphics card, etc... and now it's running slow. i.e. on the task manager, it reads 100% it used to hover around 34% or so. and i'm not running any more programs than i used to.

i have ran norton, spy sweeper, and i have pest patrol. ran all programs, but nothing is being detected. i increased the page file in the "performance" tab as stated above, and it's still running slow. what's the deaL?

also, my video card is acting up. my games aren't running correctly. i downloaded the updated drivers and all. and when i try to run the 3d test on dxdiag, it messes up then the screen goes all big.. any idea what it could be?

so later on today, everything was working ok, but when i do the dxdiag test, the box goes really fast. as if it's supercharged. is that ok?
