To get things rolling, it has actually been cooler than expected this time of year around here. Some days are just down right comfortable. Still getting way too much rain though. Looks like this week's cruise in is going to be another washout. One of these days, I will drive the Trans Am again...
Looking like Spring down here instead of August as well. Cooler temperatures and some spotty showers. Very unnatural for this time of year. Usually we're on our 3rd or 4th week on the surface of the sun by now.
A week of high 90's here....
80 here. About perfect. Too bad Camaro is still on jackstands...

Mine is doing the same thing.
I thoroughly broke the transmission. Went to replace the rear seal, couldn't get the yoke off. Tried everything, heat, hammer, come along, etc. Ended up having to surgically cutting it off, removed the tail cone and out falls what looks like pieces of either syncros or maybe a bearing or two :dunno: and also the remains of a lock ring.
Lucky no gear teeth damage I can see.
What pisses me off is it only has less than 10,000 miles on it. I had it rebuilt with stg 2 parts when I was doing the engine rebuild and while on 1st dyno session it broke the 4th gear locker ring. Had that fixed and everything was fine for about 7000 miles. Then it started having what I thought were syncro issues again. Not too bad just started missing 2nd-3rd gear shifts at the track. Then after I got the new beefed up drive shaft that's when it really went down hill. The damn rear seal started dumping fluid on me followed by now 3-4 & 4-5 gear shifting problems. I then lost reverse which looks like the solenoid died, I replaced it and was able to shift again. But while I was under I was trying to replace that damn seal. Looking back now I think the fluid got low enough that it's the cause of all the other issues or at least the most likely culprit.
So I'm back to this again...

so far I've been lucky with the car not giving me any shit but when it gets driven 200 miles a year there's not a ton of opportunity for it to break. :D Our time is going to be taken up with Zach's dirt bike in the next week or so. It needs a new clutch and fork seals. I ordered all that shit plus a haynes manual for him. He's 14 so it's time he started learning to fix things himself. I'm going to do my best to stay out of it and let him make his mistakes until he gets it apart and back together running. I doubt I'll be able to do that but that's the plan. I remember as a kid those haynes manuals being a massive help when working on my car. We didn't have the internet back then to fall back on.
Doing the same thing with my daughter (Hell I've done it to all my kids I raised). She's a year out from a learners permit (they can get on 15th b-day here) so I told her the Grand Prix will be hers, so she's gotta start helping on working on it. The basics and sometimes even the hard stuff, hey her small hands are handy sometimes. Told her if she doesn't want it, find a way to raise her own money to get a car she wants :D until then if you plan to drive it, you work on it. Free is never free....:chuckles:
She's down 2 brake pad changes and on the last one both rear calibers. She's been volunteering on helping with the Bird too. She helped me dropped the transmission last Saturday.

same here....75 cutlass I bought for $1200 of my own money. That car was easy to work on though and that olds 350 in 75 didn't make enough horsepower to hurt itself or any driveline stuff so it ran forever. When I got rid of that car it had 180k miles on it and still ran great.

My first car was a 79 Malibu that I bought in 2003 or 2004... can't remember. I swapped out the motor(to a 355) and trans(to a upgraded turbo 350) and many other items in the 2 years I owned it... mostly off of a cart pusher's salary at a local grocery store. We did have the internet when I was 16/17 doing this... but no smart phones and I didn't have a lap top. So I used the desk top and printed as much info as I could but almost always would end up running inside the house to do more research via the intertron.

Got the bow out with Zach yesterday and let him shoot. He's getting closer. He's drawing about 30 lbs now. He could probably draw 5 more but don't want to just push him to the edge. Hot and humid today with storms likely. We had some pretty quick and powerful thunderstorms Wednesday night. Dawn and I went back down to the office after the first one blew through just to make sure everything was ok there.
I really need to get the radiator swapped out in the '40. Just can't seem to find time to get at it. Wish my boss at work was less of a dick...
Volunteered to help with setup tonight for tomorrows autocross event. Hopefully I don't get my ass drenched doing so. Supposed to be nice tomorrow, high in the low 70's, overcast, and very little chance of rain.
Started the clutch swap on Zach's bike tonight. Letting him do all the work just isn't panning out. Frigin 30 year old Phillips head screws fought us the entire way so I had to do alot of it. He did learn how to deal with shitty screws. We cut 1 off with the Dremel and was able to grind flat head slots in 2 others and get them out. Tomorrow is a trip to the hardware store to get all new screws. I would like to swap to bolts but the case is so close we wouldn't be able to get a socket over them.
I have had great success with a manual impact driver (the kind you hit with a hammer) on old motorcycles. As long as you press in hard and keep pressure on it in the direction you want to go it usually works.
Plan is to head up to watch Zap auto-x his 'Bird this morning. Need to check weather though to see what we'll be driving.
Only 26 entrants today, should get a lot of runs in.
Spectated at the autocross yesterday. Very cool to watch. Zach's car gets props for coolest looking and best sounding, not to mention he did great tearing around the course.
After finishing the restoration of the antique radio, I feel up to another challenge. This one may prove my undoing though... an antique pianola, maybe from the 1920's, that we picked up for one hell of a good price -- free, just come haul it. So far, I have reconnected all the controls that had come loose and have the vacuum motor now running utilizing my AC vacuum pump (whatever works, right?). The vacuum bellows on the pianola are foot operated and the hoses are non-existent, so until I get something to replace them this is the best I can do. The pianola plays manually and really doesn't sound terrible. Only carnage appears to be a broken string up on the bass side for one of the black keys.

Same with Milwaukee. It's the "zoo" interchanges turn, which if you're trying to go west or onto north 45 on from Milwaukee you have to go through the zoo or if you're coming into Milwaukee coming from the West or North . So it's a PITA. Also they closed my work exit... so I have to get off a couple miles early or a mile after. At least we have no tolls.... knock on wood. It's not accidents or construction or the fact it takes me an hour to drive what should take 25-30 minutes. I can turn the radio up and put the windows down and be happy. It's all the asshats and their asshatery that gets me angry.
meanwhile in rural Pennsylvania, the majority of traffic on weekends is atvs and dirtbikes, and during the week it's still pretty desolate.
Someday I'll smarten up and move into the country... there just isn't money to be made out there in my profession. If there was... I would move in a heartbeat as most of my hobbies take place on rivers/lakes/woods.

Well, wheel bearing changed on the Ram. Wasn't a tie rod anyway. After pulling the truck back in the garage last night I finally heard it making noise. Quick run to town this evening confirmed suspicions as it got louder. Picked up a new bearing and already have it on the truck.
Still have to track down the noise in the Caddie. Probably another wheel bearing.
Sometimes I wish my dogs could go to school a few hours a day :)

Missed the Perseids thanks to non-stop cloud cover this weekend. I believe we are approaching record rainfalls for the month of August as well... such strange weather patterns this year.
TA needs a fuel filter I think. Starting to cut out a bit under load around 30-35mph, especially when below 1/4 tank.

Water Pump went out on the F150 on the way to work on Friday. One would think buying a truck with 40k miles on it that you could drive it more than 5k miles without issue. Ford proved me wrong.
Took a break from piano repair to tackle the radiator swap in the '40. So far, all is going well. Going to have to re-engineer some of the stuff though and have not a clue what fan setup I will be running until I drop the new radiator in and check my clearances.

Jeff, dad just picked up a 2400cfm derale efan (can be either pusher or puller) that's about 16" diameter. hoping that it does the trick on the 34. I believe that the part number is 16217 and can be had from summit. I think 16817 is a 2100cfm fan that also comes with a low profile shroud. Both required relay kits, but you should be all set for that end.
To be fair Ford shipped out Eco Boosts that were missing a head gasket

Transmission status report...It's going to hurt much more....
The major issues:
This time the 3rd gear locker ring broke in 3 places.
All syncros are trashed and need replaced, 1-4 syncro teeth are rounded off in spots (this is why I had hard time shifting)
5-6 gear ring is wraped.
Main Output shaft is seriously FUBAR in 3 spots.
Minor Issues:
Counter Shaft, 5 & 6 gears have a minor chipped tooth that looks like it may have been from a key when it broke apart. Minor in that there are no cracks in the gears, just the very tip of the gear tooth is missing but all are still usable.
So my options are:
1) fix all of the major issues with a stock output shaft for $1060
2) Fix all of the major issues but upgrade to Viper shaft (which comes with new 1350 Yoke and some more stuff) for $1340
3) or wait till Hell freezes over to save up enough for a TR6060 conversion for $5000.
Those prices are on top of the stg 2 build already paid.
Going with Viper option.

The wife currently drives a 06 trailblazer EXT. It's been a decent car.... but I did just notice it's dripping trans fluid. It's been an on going problem for a couple years. Zach doesn't don't want to fight and was scared because they're all bigger than him. Even this time he said he was gonna move tables at lunch. I talked to him about it and told him eventually he'll run out of tables. Then explained the whole "it's not the size of the dog in the fight...." thing and told him to not telegraph any punches but when he throws the first one don't stop until someone breaks it up. I saw the video....he laid an ass beating on the kid. Punched him in the face then grabbed him around the neck and drug his ass out of the seat where he continued to beat his ass until some seniors broke them up. He got one last shot in to the face as they were being pulled apart. The lesson here is don't mess with Zach's fruit cup :lmao: I told him he may be getting a t shirt out of he deal. He text me before it happened and said "he just stole my fruit cup.....to ahead and start the truck" :lol:
