GN will still lay the smack down...and that includes going up against modern boost cars so I'd say the GN should be feared more.
The cobra's can be nasty but those GN's were straight line rocket ships.
I think the GN was bigger news in it's time because it was so far ahead of everything else that US makers were putting out. By the time the Cobra rolled around there were other contenders that were close enough that it wasn't as big. The other thing about the GN was that it was much more of an everyman's car. Lots of people who wouldn't buy a hopped up mustang could afford and justify the GN to themselves. After all it had an actual usable back seat.
GN without a doubt. And I have yet to see a movie made about the Cobra...
In my opinion, easily the 87GN - hands down. Back then, that was really the only car off the showroom in the 13's. They laid the smack down on a lot of cars from the muscle era too at the time. Remember?? All those guys with '68 Mustangs that "ran 10's", only to get their asses handed to them by a 14 second car.
The '03 Cobra wasn't as ominous to me mostly since there were a lot of cars that could hang with it, abundantly available.
Edit: Speaking to potential, the GN still handles the Cobra easily IMHO. Think full frame, solid rear axle, and other details that still make it tough to beat on the street.
I really forgot how much I love these cars....

GN for sure. There are guys.... even car guys who do not know what a terminator is. You can't fear it if you have never heard about it.
I just dont see a 390hp boosted Mustang as a big accomplishment...the SS and WS6 were 320-330 from the factory. Sure you could swap a pulley on a Cobra and bump it to mid 400's but still, thats not earth shattering performance like the GN was.
The GN was a V6 turbo monster of a vehicle that was way before its time IMO...automakers are just now catching up to what that car did with a boosted V6. Ford has the ecoboost, Buick just released a new version "or close to it" of the Grand National, Ford is talking about doing a boosted V6 for the mustang in the next couple of years...it set the bar for both V8's and V6's when it came to speed and performance. The terminator did not...not even remotely close.
GNX with a boosted V6 ran a 13.3-13.1 1/4.
Terminator with a boosted V8 ran a low 13 or high 12 in the 1/4.
And don't forget the cop car in one of the Transformers movies. But none of them are 03/04 termis... are they?
It was an 05, only 3 made.
That Need 4 Speed Mustang cracks me up...every time they mentioned some spec or part I would laugh because it was all bs...
I was recently at the mecum auction in KC. There were several GNs there, and they were going cheap. They weren't A-1 cars, but still, seems like they might be a decent buy right now.
Last one I saw for sale was asking around $15,000
IIRC, back in the day the GNX was faster in the 1/4 mile than the L98 Vette...
That being said my vote goes for the Buick Grand National...
yeah.....GN has always been one of my bucket list cars. The fact it's almost 30 years old and people still talk about them says a lot.......in 30 years I doubt the 03 cobra will still be relevant. The key I believe in your question is the "in it's era" part. There really wasn't much around that you ran into on the streets that would hang with them. I'd add the TA with the same motor to that too. GM made a bad ass 6 cylinder before making bad ass 6 cylinders was cool.
Another car that isn't even in the same league with the GN I always wanted was the monte SS's from that same time. Just always loved the body style of those cars and it came out about the time I got my license so it was on my want list. Always loved the fact those cars would chirp 2nd right out of the factory.
Only reason Termi's got popular was because it was the first factory Ford car to beat a Trans AM/Camaro SS at that time period.
funny I saw this thread today. The agent sitting beside me drove her '03 Mach I today. She only drives it ever now and then. Has 43k miles
I was referring to Blackair. A movie all about the GN... not just a movie with a GN in it.
Of course, I am somewhat biased in my opinion.

It's a total sleeper. Except for the hood bulge, badges and whine from the turbo it looks like something your grandmother would drive. :D
That would be cool as hell to see a grandma driving a t-type with some extra BOOST!! LOL. I guess all the kids/grand kids would be fighting over THAT instead of the money in the will.
Don't let them cook your food.....or at least have one of them take a bite before you start eating it. :D
Looks-wise, I rather prefer the Monte Carlo over the GN. Although, I'm a die-hard stick shift driver, so I'd likely never settle into either car. I'm really thankful that GM is still making cars with three pedals, even though they "rank" the autos higher in performance now-a-days.
There was a GN in Fast and Furious... aaaaaaaand it was pretty badass....

And that Need for Speed preview was lame... who wants to see a bunch of kids crashing million dollar cars? Really? Let's see some driving... Here's one you forgot Scott (not a Termi or an 05+, but...)

The Buick G N was a very nice car in its day, Very quick and very comfortable, Unfortunately most of them started to smoke right around 40,000 miles.
87GN hands down. 87GN was an innovative leader, while the 03cobra was just an innovative follower.
Only smoke behind our car is from the tires melting. :D
That's why Ill NEVER sell my TA. I hear "wish I would've kept it" stories all the time
I do regret selling my T/A... even having the corvette afterwards. But these cars def aren't increasing in value like the GN..... not yet anyway. I kept seeing this super clean 01 SS 6 speed for sale down the street for $9,000 before the snow came. Has 60kmiles on it. Not sure if he is original owner but dude has owned that car since I was in high school. Around 2004 so if he isn't original he is damn close. So at least I know I can have one anytime I make some space in the garage.
I always have and always will have a soft spot for SS Camaro's...dont know why but I just love the look.
The C5's are coming down in price quite a bit...I saw a C5 ZO6 for $15,000 the other day and that is putting me in the market for one. Buddy of mine has a H/C ZO6 that he was wanting to sell but I think he's hanging on to it...I'll probably keep my car either way. No reason to really get rid of it...
