What does everyone do around here?

So sometimes I might be a bit nosey :blah: and I wonder what people do for a living and how the eff do they afford all the things they have (car parts and cars mostly) because I obviously wanna do the same later on in life. What do you guys do for a living and do you like it?


I'm in the USAF and so far I like it (1 yr in, 3 to go) I landed a flying job so I can't complain. I of course want to continue my education in two or three months since I'm almost done with my training here but I'm not sure what to study. Engineering? Which one! :lol: :cheers:

Inventory Manager at a car dealership.

I steal.

Police officer.

Former ASE Master mechanic at major tire dealers. Paid pretty good over the years. Now I take that experience to teach the newbies, and work 42 hours M-F. Also being a mechanic has enabled me to save several 10s of thousands of dollars, so now I don't object so much when I do have to farm out an auto repair job for my own fleet of 4. I just need a lift for my garage! Also found out how employable I am, after the economy took a shit 4 years ago. It's good to have skills!

I've often wondered how I would have done in the Air Force, good luck! Could be a very nice career, see the world and all that constant moving about, but hard for a family.

I have some engineers in my family, they do well and always have a job.

Sell meth, it has a high demand these days.

run a printing press making book covers/jackets/dust covers it was pretty neat when i started seeing how everything works and what not. work sun,mon,tue, every other wed for ot all 12hr shifts 7a-7p....we are low on work so its just been mon tue wed...its not a bad job but been looking for something that pays better

I was a Senior Project Engineer for 12 years working in the rail industry. I recently moved over to the competitor of my previous employer and am now a Regional Sales Manager. Quite the transition, but the offer was too good to refuse. They offer a pension, profit sharing, and a bonus. Plus, my salary is well above what I was making with my previous employer.

If you want to become an engineer, go to school for a Mechanical Engineering degree. You will not have a problem finding a job. You won't be rich by any means, but you will live a relatively well life.

Took a high school auto repair class and two months out of high school got hired as a tire installer. 15 years later, took an ASE test and got my A4/steering/suspension certificate. Might start taking more tests to see how far I can go. I also like tinkering with cars in my spare time.

I'm currently between jobs. My wife just had our 3rd child & she has the next 3 months off paid so she's currently the housewife. I mainly just bowhunt right now.

Same boat here, I took classes in college for suspension, brakes, drivetrain, A/C and heat, diagnostics and rebuild. All I had to do was get a job to get some "experience" and be able to test. I would still like to do it someday just to have that under my belt.

I'm a legal assistant/secretary for a lawyer. Pretty much do everything for my boss but go to court.

I'm really considering law school after my daughter graduates high school.

Yes take more tests. A lot of companies base their pay on how many ASEs you have, and some don't. You never know.

I worked for a major tire manufacturer for 20 years 10 days, then they let 8 techs go one week. They did that at each store location, no transfers for seniority. The other 2 techs had more time with the company than I did. I had a Master ASE certification plus the L1, lost my job on a Tuesday night. By Friday, I was interviewing 3 places to see who had the best to offer me. It was another major tire company, that sure was a switch after they had been the competition for so long!

As for spending money on cars, I save a lot by doing the work myself or taking it to friends in exchange for food & beer.

I worked at Costco for 20 years. At the moment not alot except for selling small things on the internet.

I perform outsourced IT services for small business and have done so for more than 25 years. On weekends I often perform wedding ceremonies. In my past lives I have been a heavy construction project manager, ski instructor, bartender, musician, and flooring installer.

Commercial plumber (since ~1998), New construction, and remodels.

Fire sprinkler certified.

2nd trade: Welding/ metal fab. Down sized last year, dropped the fab work but still do welding here and there.

Life long buddy of mine has been working for BNSF in their Los Angeles yard for 20+ years doing that very same thing. He also described his job as a conductor.

As for me? I work as a Sr Product Designer (bus bars and/or power distribution devices), currently employed by General Atomics in San Diego. Ever hear of the Predator Drone? We make them...

Going on 14 years Army now, initially joined up as Airborne Infantry but after three years of that I reclassed to Aviation working & flying on CH-47D/F helicopters. Currently a Standardization Flight Engineer Instructor (SI) enjoying the non deployable status and family life here in AL:coffee:

I am currently a Regional Sales Manager for a company that provides freight car components to the rail industry. We sell gravity/pneumatic gates, plastic pellet gates, draft gears, side bearings, brake beams, and hatch covers on the freight side of the business. There is also 3 other divisions which sell other rail related products.

Im a color specialist for a large chemical company making plastic. I work shift work, but for 100k+ A YR.if I didn't make that wouldnt b here. Hrs. Suck but easy job...lol a lot of net surfing.

If you are requesting on my post that is due to bnsf and the blet and shitty forcing seniority agreements. If i get a locomotive engineers license to run in chicago which has practically no road turns out of it due shitty agreements that is why I don't become a locomotive engineer. Then for the first 10 to 15 years be expected to be forced from chicago kansas to lacrosse to who knows where which our seniority district is the largest due bullshit agreements. But working the rr would not give it up due to hate working with dumbass people and still make 6 figures or more. CNC Machinist. I primarily make firearm components (rails, spacers, adapters, sights, etc..). Every now and again we have a cool project come through the shop. I've made parts for custom motorcycles that went to the International Motorcycle Show in New York. We've also made parts for a few race cars. Our next door neighbor used to race mini-sprints. I miss doing fun shit like that.

all this led up to my mechanical engineering degree, which i was designing hydraulic detachable, mechanical detachable, drop deck flat deck, you name it semi trailers for Trail King......

which also turns out i dont like being in a cube, so i quit, moved and got on with a oil industry company as a floor sweeper pretty much, and they taught me how to weld, got me certified and all that jazz, now i love the company and as a damn floor sweeper i was at 64k a year take home, so i get the bills paid now....

On a side note, I did try to deliver an elephant once. Didn't work out so well. I did get $200k, but I blew it all. And I ended up getting stuck with two elephants, and a fat, drunk, doctor. I did give the auto industry quite a bit of business though....
