Help me pick a tire

So I picked up a tire for my ride with the extra money coming from my second job. I nabbed a front tire, Nitto NT 555 extreme performance 275/40/17 and looking to get a rear tire (I'm doing it half ass backwards :D )

I was thinking about either of these three tires (Same model, different sizes) Which one would be the better pick for my ride

Torquer V2 cam
LS6 P&P heads complete
Full bolt on
Stock gearing
M6


Nitto 555R DR

305/35ZR/18
305/40R/18
305/45R/18

Being mounted on 04 OEM Z06 wheels.

Go ahead and vote. 1 tire down and 3 to go, I'll be picking up this selection early next week more then likely. Traction is key here and I know there is probably better choice of tire brand out there but I want to stay with the same brand on all 4.

After talking with Smittro, I'm going with the 45mm sidewall tire. Thanks for the help LS1.com :chuckles:

Any particular reason why?

I love my NT555s. Before I installed mine, I held up one Nitto in one hand and one old BFG in the other. The Nitto was lighter, which is better anyway. Less unsprung weight.

Going from a 25" tire to a 28" tire will help with hooking because I gain a hair more top end and lose a little torque. I'm going to go with 4:11's later on so I would think it would help in the long run. Plus with a bigger sidewall the traction should be better :shrug:

I'm open for suggestions if anyone wants to throw in their opinions :shrug:

They are a good quality tire for the price. Discount tire has 285/40-17 555's for 161.00 each delivered. Way cheaper then the shitty Goodyear F-1 GS tires my car came with. They hook like crazy after they get a little warm, they seem to wear well but I will let you know more on that in the future. I also feel they work well in the rain but that was only once when I got caught in a storm. The ride quality is good and the handling is super. Nuff said. for 645.00 delivered you can't beat the N-555.

The nittos are solid tires that wear well for what they are. The price is nice too but don't expect to set any record times as you will not be launching all that hard with that tire.

That's exactly what I'm looking for, a nice wearing tire with decent grip for the price. Still on stock rear end so not looking for 100% traction. Just looking for more grip then what I get now.....which is none lol

If your looking for grip BFG KD or KDW's. If you want traction at the track Mickey is the best way to go. Nittos may get you a 1.8 60'(may the best I ever got was a 1.9 60'). ET streets got me to a 1.8 60'. And Mickeys plus the 4000 stall got me to 1.5 60'. Again if I want road grip BFG's all day long.

So what size sidewall should I run and why? I see 35 is winning but no reasoning why :)

I forgot you're a M6 I would not go more than Nitto... :p

For SUMMER/WARM Climate street use - Hell Yeah on Nitto 555's.

They handle great when I get caught in the rain (which seems every damn day this summer) Decent at the track but the main issue for you is that they are a summer tire only. Where you live, how many days does it drop below 35-45*?

What I'm saying is this is not a tire to run for you based on your location. You may get what 4 months of warm weather before you have to swap them out. Where I live I can run them all year long and have no issues. I only get maybe a week of temps below 35*, the rest of the time it's low to high 40-50*



Minimal sidewall - I suggest nothing lower then 45 depending on wheel size. If you do a lot of autox type driving then 50. The lower the sidewall the less the tires can flex on hard turns. To fast while on an aggressive turn and you can roll the tire right off the wheel.

And yeah Z28, pesky M6 will get me in trouble with super stickies.

FYI : Nearest track to me is an hour and a half. With that said, I'm only going to get maybe 15 track passes a year or so :shrug:

I have had Nitto's and KDW's on the Z. The KDW's were IMO 100% better than the Nitto's for a year round tire. I am currently running 295/35R18 ZR Ulra Sessanta Vredestein tires. Great tire as well but still think BFG has it down with the KDW's. Sumitomo's suck... I have ran many different tires on the Z.. :p

I'll take a look at the KDW's when I get on a computer.

The 555's suck, I have nt05r's, the best tire i've ever run on the street. They do pretty well at the track too.

555's are bein run on the front only, 555R's on the rear...unless you meant the R's

Yeah i wasnt thrilled with the factory GY F-1 GS...( V- patterned tread)But I have had real good grip dry and excellent rain repelling with my Goodyear Eagle F-1 GS-D3`s (275/40 ZR-17) The only drawback @ that time of purchase was the price! $$......

If you drive the car year round then this tire may not be the best choice because they work best when warm. I only drive my car 15 to 20 times a year between May and October. I still love the 555's but not in snow.

Car sits for most of the year. I have a DD for the long winter months. I usually get my car out in April depending on salt conditions and weather and drive it to October (That's when it was running every year type deal :lmao: ) So I could careless about all season driving with these. Spring/Summer/Track/Street only :D

Voted 35 sidewall, just because 45's will look too big, are you dropped? If not, do you plan too? I'm thinking you'll have rubbing issues if you go with 45's, at least roll the fenders :dunno:


555r's are good tires, wont hold my car if I dump the clutch but that's expected but I roll out of the clutch they'll hook and move nicely (I also have 4.11's). A really good burnout also gets decent traction at the strip.

Excellent info, stock ride height now but want to lower it later on when the suspension is tired, good thing to think about

Then go with the NT-555's. 645.00 delivered from Discount Tire. You can't beat that deal for such a good tire.

I'm going to go with a 40 or 35 because after googling 18" wheel with 305/45 I'm looking at maybe a 1/5 of a in clearance on stock height without modding to make it fit

I got 1.8 60's on them before my 4.11's

Not too shabby. Best I cut with them was 1.906 and that was dumping the clutch at 4200RPM. I also already had 4.11 gears then as well. Never was able to get anything below that in about a dozen attempts. Most were 1.93 to 1.97, which is about what I got with street tires. I was disappointed in their performance at the track. However, they are great street tires for a DR.

Best I've cut on street tires was 2.2 with about 30 launches varying the RPM's and clutch everytime. I'd be super happy with a 1.9 or better :dunno:

If I remember right, I've gotten a 2.06 on the OEM Goodyears with my car when I had the 3.42 gears in it.

First time to track was full bolts :shrug:

No drag radial is going to be great at the track. You need either an ET Street or Slick.

I have heard that the NT05r is an awesome tire though. Chris just got them and loves them.

Don't get me wrong, the Nitto 555r DR grips really well on the street. I have about 12K miles on mine now and they still hook relatively well. When they were new, they dead hooked in 1st from a roll.

ok great.. that's mainly what they will be used for is the street.. not sure when i will ever get to the track.
right now the sumitomos are still on the car from when i got it and damn it's alittle scary when it breaks loose so bad shifting into second!:eeek:

You're also making alot more power then me :lol:

I had them on the car when I just had 4.11s, exhaust, lid and headers also. That is when I cut the 1.906 60'. Even with the added power, I do not even get a bark shifting into second. They hook hard.
