understood where dad and grandpa were coming from today

My dad and grandpa always worked on their own cars. I remember them bitching about how big of a pain is was to work on "new" cars. That was in the 70's and 80's. :lol: The wifes new Dodge Journey needed washer fluid today so as I was putting that in I was really looking it over and just shaking my head. The oil filter is on the top of the motor and it isn't a traditional type filter. It's open element and fits into it's own little compartment. Then I'm looking at what it's going to take to do a plug change......I never did lay eyes on the plugs. :lol: What a bitch that's going to be at some point. I just looked around in there a couple minutes but it looks like some shit is gonna have to come off the motor to do a plug change. I was just looking at it thinking how different the engines are now versus what they were when I was in high school and working on my 75 cutlass. I remember sitting under the hood of that car in a rain storm changing a fuel pump that was mounted directly to the side of the block. Wonder what they'll look like when Zach is 40 years old?

^^^The whole engine will get replaced as a unit, like starters and alternators are now. Those used to get rebuilt, not anymore! If the engine gets a misfire, then Bam! new engine. Who knows.

Few bolts lines and connectors off comes the intake manifold then bam you have plugs out.
They rebuild them when found to be cost effective per 70% sheet policy

I remember dad teaching me how to rebuild an alternator. Back then an alternator was expensive as hell but you could buy a rebuild kit for just a few bucks. You also didn't just change rotors out.....every shop in town would turn them for like $5 a rotor.

Sadly bits cost way too much anymore. They'll cut them for you but it costs more than 5 bucks

yeah i remember helping my grandad turn rotors in his shop all the time....I finally found a shop that still has one, ill prob get my R1s turned if need be

rotors are made so thin and cheap I'm not sure you can even turn them anymore.....maybe once.

Some you can cut twice if they're a good rotor

I always turn mine when I do a brake change. Unless they are too thin then I replace. OEM's I can get several turns out of them. I put a cheap set of autozone rotors on a car one time and they were too thin after one set of pads.

Cars are engineered and thoughtout today, years ago they designed a car then tried to figure out how to route the exhaust.

Today "room" is considered waste in an engine compartment.

0rion, I remember feeling the same way when I first looked under the hood of my 88 Alfa back in 92. (I had been driving the Chevelle for 7 years at that point) It also occurred to me that you'd practically have to be a magical dwarf to work on it. Talk about compact... :p

I thought maybe you boned your gramma and mom...............again.

When buying a car I always look under the hood to see what it will be like to maintain it. Our '12 Challenger has the top mounted canister style oil filter which I will soon be changing for the first time.

My friends LT5 had the oil filter that screwed on from the top.....that thing sucked.

I know newer cars in general are more efficient, better built, and all around just better cars but those old cars were nice to work on. Everything was simple, cheap to fix, plenty of room, and no metric bullshit.

na.....just PA in general. I grew up in the south, take pride in being a hillbilly, but some of the most back assward country people I've ever met were in PA. I'm talking overalls with no shirt on and hunting boots........in August kinda country.

My g6 has the cartridge style oil filter and i like it. It seems easier and actually more logical to me than the traditional style filter. And dodge sucks when it comes to spark plugs. Theres 16 on their v8 ram truck now and on their older stratus and cirrus you had to take the upper intake manifold off to get to the rear plugs.

wife's 4.7 durango was the easiest set of plugs I've ever changed. All were right on top and didn't have to do anything to get to them. I wish they all were that easy.

As with any transverse mounted 3.5 and 4.0. The Duratec V6 Furds are the sameway

Does it have a dipstick for the transmission? Every newer Dodge car I have seen required some kind of special tool that costs like 150 bucks from the dealer just to check tranny fluid :growl:

several makes are doing something similar to that now....the caddy's have been without a tranny dipstick for years.

I f'ing hate this!!!! I got so pissed off about my wifes jeep not having a dip stick to be able to check it out. Even my dd has one, granted it is a little difficult to get at but it is still there.

Anyone look at how hard it is to change the passenger side last spark plug! Cut a few knuckles until I realized I had to go from underneath

On the ls1 Camaro that is

after getting LT's it (#8 plug) is out & in in under 5 mins.

2005 and 2012 in my garage. :) Scratch that, I should say garages because that is plural and I have two. They sit inside so no, not a single care on blocks.
