98 z28 vs 98 cobra

my buddy has a 98 cobra wit some random mods (cold air intake x pipe single chambers a few others i think i never pay attention ) he claims 300 rwhp and 350tq he has a tune im doubtful its really there with out headers but im not a mustang expert he claimed he would beat me... we raced a few times from a roll and once from a dig i didnt pay attention to where i was but i beat him pretty bad . he got the jump traction was an issue but reeled him in quickly and left him (ill post the best video )
he says he has more tq than me and a better low end just no mid & top end i just let him

he was furious lol he went bought 4.10s and wants to run again this weekend ill post vids after

my mods
lid
mac mids with just a y

hypetech programmer with adjusted shift points and there so called "power tune"

4:10's will make a big difference for any car honestly, let us know how the next race goes

i dont doubt that ...im eager to race.... i havent raced one with 4.10s that i know of

Stock auto's suck from a roll.....especially w/ 273's...Cobra's are 99% driver cars, theres no way you would have ran past him like that w/ a competant driver from a roll, not saying you couldnt have won but not like that.

You got this!!!

2 months later it happened again same outcome ....he got a tune the 4.10s and I added a bbk intake

Nice kill but it almost looks like the video is doctord up a bit, I hope not! Its always nice to spank a Ford!

lol no its not "doctord" if i knew how to alter videos id somehow beat a buggatti lol
thanks though here are some videos
98 z28 vs 98 cobra - YouTube

the first one had a botched honk off

98 z28 vs 98 cobra part 3 - YouTube

from a 30ish roll i let him honk it off he jumped the gun

its all in good fun though now hes getting a supercharger

damn u smoked him bad

Next is JATO assist!!!:chuckles: Actually, I have had the same experience with S187 Mustangs at the drag strip. They come on strong out of the hole and the Camaro just walks on past them about mid track. Every time that happens the Mustang guy cops a "missed shift" plea, without exception. All his 4.11s did was give him a little extra pop out of the hole, where he alread had an edge, but they will limit his trap speed. My 2000 Z28 is also an A4 with 2.73 gears. My best run was 13.44 @ 107.43 mph. I was looking to upgrade to a series 2 3.45 rear end out of a M6 car but I've been told a 3400 stall would do more for the car's performance than a set of gears.

Jato assisst?

Jet Assisted Take Off. It was a technique tried out in the early jet age to get some of the heavier military aircraft off the ground in a short runway situation. Still used on some versions of the C-130 to get heavy loads off the ground more quickly. Kind of a Wiley Coyote (I assume I won't have to explain that reference) solution, like the Acme Rocket pack. Thought it might help the guy's Mustang beat the Cammy.:naughty:

Oh ok I learned something yeah I want gears but I'm waiting on a sweet deal on a rear End bcuz I hate having to set pinion depth n all that good stuff I'm not sure I want a cam I wanna see how fast I can get it with the stock cam

Nice kills. Always nice to see the people who talk smack get smacked down. And yeah, I'd do the stall before changing gears, unless you get the M6 3.42 set-up for real cheap. Then, a stall!

As a current 96 cobra owner looking for a GTO he's NOWHERE near claimed HP/TQ. He's around 280/265 WHP/TQ respectively. I have I/LT/OR-X/E/3.73s tune and suspension and Dyno at 289/279 run 13.5-13.7s. He's not making anything near 350 TQ. These cars require 4.30s to wake them up. Small displacement+high revving V8 requires very steep gears. 4.56s and radials put em in DEEP 13s.

Just some insight. Good kills

Yeah I figured his numbers weren't what he claimed (i claim to be stock to nor scare people away and my tds are pretty quiet im not sure )but it's time for a new motor my old ls1 has 195 on clock time for some more cubes

You have some great traction, eh? What's your 60 ft at the drag strip, 1.7x? Last April I had a 1.98 on my new Potenza RE 760s, and ran a 12.97 @ 108.2. Also, your lower curb weight helps, not like the 3800 lb+ new ''pony'' cars.

Yeah I hook pretty well. On 275 555Rs I cut 1.9 60s. On my buddies slicks I cut a 1.7 but the were 28" and I didn't have enough gear for them and came through out of my powerband. And yes, I'm pretty light. I've done all the typical weight reduction. My fastest time was when I removed my front and rear crash bars, and 75% of my interior. I put it back in though. That was just for shits and gigs. If I wasn't looking for a GTO I'd put it on a shot and cut 12s all day which is good enough for me. I'm not looking for a race car

^^^yup that's what my goal is. Have a consistent 12 second car, over 110 MPH, and still get over 25 MPG. This Spring the family and I drove the WS6 to Hershey PA, 559 miles from our house, and she got 28.3 MPG on the way back. 2 weeks later I did the 12.97. I need an LS6 intake, I'm saving some fun $$$ for it. There are always other things demanding a few hundred dollars tho!

Yeah, I honestly love my cobra. It's light, handles well, has great top end, but, it's up there in age, small, and not much creature comforts, that's why I'm switching it up

Update :
His imrc's were stuck so it was robbing him of power so he wants to run again ...I haven't done much to my car besides a bbk intake ,finished the exhaust and finally got it out of limp mode should be interested

Yup, very common problem. IMRCs being stuck rob about 25-30 WHP and the same for TQ. Ford didn't do much quality assurance with those

what are IMRC`s?

Intake manifold runner control
They close part of the intake below a certain rpm then opens once its reached kinda like v tech for ford IMO

Sort of, a much less technical version. VTEC actually changes the cam profile and timing, IMRCs just open another port in the intake manifold. I helps with torque below 3K, then opens up for top end. When they operate properly, they're great. Problem is, they never operate properly lol

You'll still take him. Especially from a roll. A full 1/4, you have him pretty good, unless your car needs a driver mod lol.

Actually, from a roll is where he's going to be the strongest. If he's getting the jump on you like that consistently, when he gets all his top end back, you're going to really have to fight to reel him back in. Again, it's nearly 30 WHP you lose when those stick closed. Mine failed as well, it was a dog. ZERO top end. I said eff it and deleted them

I figured those 4.10s were helping him on the 0-60, not the 30 and up to triple digets. '98 Cobras, after the factory fix, were running 14.0? About the same as a new 2.73 AT LS1 I thought.

My stock 2.73 AT LS1 with a lid ran a 13.44 on streets as stated earlier. I took it to the track hoping to break 14.0. First pass was a 13.87 and it kept getting quicker on each succive pass as I figured out how to drive it through the traps.

I was talking more about his IMRCs. 4.10s don't kill out top end. 4.30s+ do. A 100% stock 96-98 cobra usually runs around a 13.8 and trap a 103. The cars respond great to mods. But, they really take a drivers mod to be quick. You can't take em to redline (7100 rpm) and the junk of a transmission (T45) really takes finess to not miss shifts.

Pretty good. I had a 98 Trans Am with 2.73 and AT, my best in that car was a 13.65 @ 103.3. Usually a couple tenths slower than that @ 100. I've always run Goodyear/Bridgestone summer performance tires, but no ET streets.

13.2 @ 107 In my 01 ss AT all stock other then a muffler that was the best i could get out of it before i got the mod bug

i dont have much experience with the 98 cobras however i have run an 01 numerous times. when i was stock it was a decent race from a 30 usually had about a car on him. he had intake exhaust and a tune.

ran him after the cam and heads swap and lets just say you can measure in air craft carrier lengths

That's why I want out of ford. It's just too damn expensive to make fast. I feel like I beat up on Hondas and F bodies beat up on me. I've only beat 1 WS6 once and it was close, and I think it was cause he was a shit driver. I do like the handling though. Mine has a lot of suspension done for intentions of auto-x but it just never happened. 90% of what I do is drag race, so I figure I might as well get something quicker.

I will say, if they can afford it, cobras are down right nasty on boost. The stock blocks handle around 550, add that with light weight and decent gears and they down right move out

Ls1's are nasty boosted as well but ....u can make anything fast as long as your pockets are deep enough

True story. What can I expect out of a bolted GTO with 100 shot? That's the plan at least. 5.7 btw, 6.0s are kinda out of my budget

I've read different numbers but u can never kno until u get it bolt em on and run it ....why Not get a early ctsv but gto's are heavy but they are so much more comfortable than the fbodys ....I had dreams of a gto but my next car will hopefully be a ctsv .....the looks you'd get from mustangs and some fbodys after u had them their asses in Cadillac sedan would be priceless ....

Only reason with those is the interior is kinda cheaply and flimsy and the rear ends are junk. My busy has a HCI GTO with a few other mods and it's exactly as fast as I want. Low 12/high 11s, reliable, and sounds mean.

That fast? I don't remember magazines getting those times out of the '98 Cobras, and I dug thru some time slips from when I had my '98, and one was when I ran late 90s Cobra, it wasn't pretty for him. It's faded, 10 years ago on June 10th 2002, but the slip reports say his time was a14.438 @ 99.61, with a 2.33 60 ft. My '98 did a 13.89 @ 100.74, with a 2.12 60 ft. My notes say the Cobra was a 1997 5 speed, and his time was consistent with what magazines were reporting back then.

The cts-v is nice and luxurious dont get me wrong ive had one but didnt last long and the pizzaz faded and i came back to camaros lol

Did u go back to a 4th gen or 5th gen ....why'd you decide to get rid of it

I went back to a 4th gen i hate 5th gen bodystyling and i just didnt like having 4 doors plus they have there quirks and insurance is RIDICULOUS i paid 325/month for full coverage and only paid 280 for the car payment so that was another factor, and it takes more to get them as fast as cammed camaro or ta

the bottom car on my sig is the one i have now that i got rid of the V for

Yeah i kinda like the 5th gens there jus so damn heavy lol but I remember when people weren't fans of the ls1 front facia I think it takes time ....how much did your lq motor run you ...did u choose lq over ls1 for the block strength

well its kind of a long story lol i bought the car with a forged lq9 and it blew up a week after i got it. so i had a place in texas build the 370 short block out of my original lq9. plus i plan to spray ALOT on it and opted for an iron block and forged internals over and aluminum for strength and price difference but have to say im in love with getting shitty at 60

That's run of the mill, some slower, some quicker. A buddy has an all stock 98 with a short shifter and cuts consistent 13.7s, but I think he has a factory stud, and, it only has about 50k on the clock, so it's still relatively a fresh car

14.438 @ 99.61? Wow. I've got a 69 Mustang convertible with 302 that's mildly "heated up" with a cam, 4V, GT40P heads, Tri Y headers and Motorsport roller rockers. It's a C4 3 speed auto with a shift improver kit and 3.55 gears. It ran a best 14.301 @ 99.1 at Sacramento Raceway a few years ago. So I'm quicker than a 90's Cobra? Cool!:naughty:

Sounds like a nice fun car! I have a '68 Le Mans convertible, it has a 400 4 barrel with headers, flowmaster mufflers. But, with the stupid 2 speed AT and 2.52 rear gears, it sounds good but no acceleration. It's like taking off in 3rd then shifting into OD. I can run low out to 93 MPH before I see 5200 on the tach! Damn kids of mine taking all my fun modding money lol. It needs a 3 speed AT and some 3.55s to be in the 14s like you. Any pics of yours in the classic muscle thread? And you probably confuse people when you say something about the 4V, gen Ys would think you refer to a 4 valve head!

Great time! I'm guessing that your SS has the 3.23 gears instead of the 2.73s. That would probably give you the quicker e.t., but the 107 with the lower gears would tend to indicate that you were making a s--- load of power up top as well. My old girl has 135K on the clock now, so I doubt if it could duplicate that time and trap speed today, but it was pretty impressive (to me at least) for a basically stock car.

Yeah, the oldies are fun rides, but I don't have to tell you that. For the benefit of the whippersnappers, a 4V is a four venturi or four barrel carburetor. Mine is a 625cfm Road Demon. I don't have a photo posted, but the car is a really stock looking standard convertible in Meadowlark Yellow with black interior and top. It has the chrome rallye wheels, dual sports mirrors and a luggage rack. It's fun to beat guys butts with that thing because it does look like something your grandma would be driving. The cam lope gives it away, however.:naughty: Even my regular mechanic thought I was B.S.ing about that 14.308 pass. He came out to the drag strip with another client's 69 351W Sportsroof (fastback) that he had just finished and saw my convertible make back to back to back passes at 14.38, 14.32 and 14.36. Came over and admitted he hadn't believed me previously. Then, he didn't build my car like the Sportsroof he was up there with, I did.

yup 3.23's and a lot of seat time playing with where to launch and such
