Poll: Which would you rather have in your garage?

1.) A 2005 C6, manual trans with ~100k

2.) A 2009 Challenger R/T, manual trans with ~75k

Assume that both cost ~$20,000(+2k/-0k).

Note neither would be a DD and would probably see less than 3k miles/year. Presumably neither would be taken on road trips greater than 300 miles.

Neither would be retained for "collector" status, just a fun Friday or weekend driver. Dinner-and-a-movie type vehicle for date-night with the Mrs.

Serious question. I love the look of the Challenger and the power isn't too bad even though it's heavy, but the Corvettes always carry more mystique as "the vehicle to have".

Interweb community thoughts?

Corvette. 50+k car vs 35k car. Vette handles better, MUCH MUCH faster, is a true drivers car, and like the old saying goes. The Vette gets em' wet.

Most are going to Corvette I'm sure. But I'd take the Challenger, only because there are soooooooooo many Corvettes around here. Kills the specialness of them for me.

Mark me down in the Vette column.

vette... cant stand dodge..... everything they make falls apart. my gfs old dodge avenger was the biggest POS

I agree...........but even if every guy is bopping a hottie it wouldnt make me want to pork a chubby chick.

Sort of like going to South Beach. I fell in love every 30 seconds.

C6 hands down.

C6...

The big questions in my mind would be do I need a back seat? If no then the vette, in my case I drive alot with my kid and just got rid of my motorcycle because of lack of ability to child transport. So at this point in my life I would go with the Challenger even if I got to keep my DD.

C6...

c6!!!!

C6 always the General before FUBAR......sorry MOPAR

Another vote for the C6..

C6.

If the Challenger were an SRT8 I would take the Challenger, otherwise the Corvette...

C6..considering an LS2 is cheaper to rebuild/replace if the high mileage gets to the stock motor over time...which is hard for any LS motor. Not certain how the Hemis hold up over time.

 mmmmm

vette

I see a good number of early C5s for sale with 150k on them so I'm not too concerned with longevity on the pushrod motors. Now, on my last modular Ford motor that would have been pushing the limits.

Plus, as stuff wears out it's a great excuse to modify/upgrade.

I really like the Challenger but I would buy the Corvette.

I'd keep looking.....:look:

For me personally the mileage would be too high on the Vette, and I don't care for the challenger.....

C6 for me

Vette, wouldnt even think .2 seconds about the decision either. The challenger only sells at all, because of people that want the retro look. When you get down to it, the challenger isnt a very good car. Its big, bulky and theres lines on it that flat out look like a cheap rental car. Even with the strong engines it runs crappy times. The c6 is a million times better car

Yup. The quality of chrysler products is soooo piss poor, it doesnt shock me at all the shit they've been through the last few years.

If you were talking a 70s Challenger or C6, I think I'd say the challenger.. but since you're talking what they call a challenger now.. no brainer.. C6..

i hate vets so guess mopar it is but would rather have loaded 300 with hemi

I really like the way the Challenger looks, but the C6 is 2x the car the Challenger is and can look nice as well.

I think u know what to do...

I cant say how good a hemi is with high miles but I have friends who have lots of miles on them and they are doing well. Pretty much to me they are an LS1 copy....lol

I have one in my 2005 Jeep and its quite snotty for a grocery getter. At 73k miles its rock solid, doesnt burn a shirt ton of oil, mileage is still the same as it was when I got it. The Hemi feels weak at under 2k rpms and weak above 5k. Could be the cam in my Jeep vs what is in the Challenger though. Perhaps? In the midrange it has lots of power though.

For $20K you have quite a choice on brand new cars. And if you only have $20K to spend then you really don't need a performance car to start with.

C6.

It's an all around better performer than the Mopar, and even though you said it doesn't matter, it's most likely going to hold it's value better.

Plus there's just something about a Vette.

Although, for that money, you could prob get a much lower mileage C5, maybe even a Z06.

Only 20k to spend on a "toy" car. Some people dont value a performance car at more than 20k so 20k could be the limit and they could afford more but some people have other things to put money in to. As much as I used to spend on golf a year I could have bought that 20k car in about 4 years with cash.

Sort of like a budget for a company. They budget only 2k a year for office supplies but that doesnt mean they cant afound the 1.5m they have in the budget for raw materials.

Go to the supermarket with $50 and you can say "I have enough groceries at home but those lobster tails look great." Just because you only have $50 on you at that time doesnt mean you cant afford more. Its all you want to spend, just like this case. 20k is all that the OP is wanting to spend.

Plus, what kind of new car can you get for 20k??? Nothing with performance anywhere near close to a C6 or Challenger. Shoot, you can't even get a decently optioned Focus for under 20k these days.

Hmmm, used C6 vs. a new Elantra or Corolla, etc. Tough call.

No doubt......

Just because someone only wants to spend 20k on a car doesnt mean they cant afford more, its all they want to spend.

People confuse what they can spend and what they want to spend.

I don't want/need a new car though. I was just asking the performance community which vehicle they like better for something fun.

20k is the budget I've established that will not detract at all from anything else in my family's life. Since this is a "toy" for me, not a DD and definately not necessary, I really can't justify spending more than that. Personally, I think 20k is a pretty large amount to drop on a "toy", akin to buying a used boat or something similar. The difference being, only my wife and I can enjoy the car (versus a boat, which the whole family could use).

If I found something I really like for less, I'll spend less. If there's something I have to have for a few grand more, I'll spend more. :burnout:

I like TLS's analogy to the lobster tails at the supermarket. Yes, I could afford more...I could finance what I don't wish to spend on the car's purchase. The downside is that payment each month might reduce the number of times the family goes out to eat, or the wife gets new shoes or coach purses, or the kids go to the movies. So it's not worth it to me to spend more than that...even though the car's for me, I take my family's well-being into consideration when making purchases.

Moral of the story is stick to the Corvette...lol

Honestly though, lower mileage C5Z or even a normal C5 would not be out of the possibility. Of the two you mentioned though the Corvette would be my choice. Unless it had a oil guzzler 6.0 which does exist.

Peformance-wise, it's still a bit underpar compared to the 2009/10 GTs even though the peak numbers are about the same. Torque curve is obviously better in the GT, and therefore it's a bit faster.

That said, I think it's the best bang for the buck on the road. Looks pretty sharp (subjective, of course) and has great numbers for the price.

Back in the SN-95 (pre-1999) days Ford offered a GTS Mustang. It had the V8 and was basically a stripped down GT. Cloth seats, roll up windows, etc. The benefit was you got the GT package a lot cheaper. None of the frills, all of the performance.

I can't justify getting an '11 V6 as you'll never be able to duplicate the sound of a GT. It just doesn't have that 'rumble'. If Ford offered the 2011 GT in a GTS model and sold it for 25k, I'd be at the dealership the same day I got back to the lower-48 to sign papers.

What's the fine print on that?

I'm guessing that will include at least 10% down, 2k cash or trade, armed forces discount, college grad discount, Ford loyalty discount and all that other stuff they throw in there.

Car dealers here advertise like that all the time...they throw out this low price in big print, then in fine print there's a big list of things you need to qualify for, and hardly anybody can actually qualify for all of the items needed to actually get that rock bottom price.

Plus, no self respecting car guy would choose a V6 Mustang over a V8 powered car. Sure the V6 Mustang is a good car, being about equal with a 4.6 GT, but still....it'd be like having your choice of the Kardashian sisters and choosing Kloe over Kim.

I wish chevy would do that with the Camaro. No power windows, no power locks, no power seats, single cd player, 4 speakers, cloth seats, manual transmission, cheapest wheels possible, single color paint....no frills and price that baby at 25k or less and LOTS of people will be buying it. I know I would have to think about it. lol

I know, wouldn't it be great if they made cars like this?

No side airbags, stability/traction control, navigation, touch screens and all that BS they load new cars up with these days.

That's why all these cars are such pigs and cost so much.

It's one thing I like about my '00....other than the primitive traction control and the ABS, it's pretty much a dinsosaur these days. I like that. Simple is better.

I've got to do a bit more reseach on common issues with each of the model years, but I've got some time before purchasing. Currently, I'm up in Alaska and am not going to pay to have it shipped down to Georgia. I like everything about the C5s except the pop-up head lights. Makes 'em look too dated, IMO. The retrofit, aftermarket lights that some people install are even worse though.

On the other hand, the benefit of a 20k C5 is it's going to have relatively low mileage and be a true garage-queen.

I'm just glad you didn't say, "Forget the car, you should buy your family a boat!"

Ha ha

With a 100K mile car you have only begun with expenses. Your $20K budget will be busted pretty quickly with repairs and maintenance. Might want to consider something else.

If your Corvette is in that sad of shape at 100k it has had a rough life and its a POS. Lots of F-body cars on here (designe goes back about 15 years from teh C6) with a ton more miles than that and they are not riddled with repairs and maintenance issues.

Cars of old, yes I agree 100k is the point where crap starts to go down hill in a hurry but I dont think that is the case with the newer cars. Not in the least.

I wouldnt spend 20k on a 100k mile car but thats just me.

I've seen C6s with 60k run around $23k. Keep looking, and get a Vette, no doubt

I bet! The one I found w/ 98k off of Craigslist on a lot in BG, Kentucky was listed for $21,000. It was sold within the week.

Great to know though, that they can be found < 25k!!!

that yellow c6 was hella nice, looked like a 2011 not a 2005,had the polished "gumby" wheels the current c6 vettes have.he has a 2008 jetstream blue corvette six speed with 50k miles for 32,999 right now and a silver 07 z06 for 42,999.

the zr1...notice the engine cover was signed, only name i recognize is ron fellows

http://www.autotrader.com/dealers/in...C&cardist=5997

I know its off topic but there are places to get left over BRAND NEW CORVETTES for under 40k. Who in the hell would spend 33k on a 50k mile car that is 3 years old is beyond me when for 6k more you get a new one.

33k is not that good a deal and I dont care what book value is....lol

Where is this corvette outlet you speak of? Website? I am going to start looking for a used c6 in a year or so when the Monte is paid off.
