Engine, suspension, brakes, wheels, steering, all uprgraded over a GT. It isn't a sticker package that most manufacturers put on their "special editions"

Wonder what GM will come out with to compete with this car? Probably nothing.

Ford is really whooping ass nowadays. Not just with the Mustang's, but with pretty much everything. IMO, GM's current lineup looks pretty weak when compared to Ford's.

why would gm need to come out with something to compete with it? they have a wide range of performance oriented cars for the public to choose from. and lets face it, most people who buy a camaro or mustang done have great handling as #1 on there mind.

That's true man, but that wasn't quite where I was headed.

The SS has a hard time competing with the new 5.0 Mustang and the Z28isn't looking too promising IMO. And now that Ford has come out with the BOSS which will most likely outperform the SS in pretty much every single performance based category possible I'm sure, what do they have out there that will be able to compete with this car for the money? Car and Driver is predicting 36k for the base BOSS and 40k for the Laguna Seca.

that peformance can easily be matched or exceed--- gm already has the drivetrains for it. but they will likely only put the package together if the market demands it. and will most of the general public want to spend the extra money for a camaro that handles like a vette? not very likely. like i previously posted i dont believe this will be a hot seller. ford puts all their chips into the mustang because it's their flagship model with various trim packages. the camaro is not gm's flagship model.

I simply don't care.

I don't own a Mustang and don't plan on buying one, but I would take one in a second over the new Camaro.

Though honestly, I wouldn't pay $30k+ for either of them.

I think the days of picking up these things at like 25-30k are done. I might be wrong but the cobra's (03-04) were like low 30's right? Damn prices just keep going up. I have seen very few 5.0's on the road. A friend ordered one and should be here nxt month by this time. Should be the first one in town for a while.

Base gt's and ss's are cheaper than 4th gens similarly optioned counting inflation. And you get a whole lot more car, feature wise and the whole ugly bloated whale thing..

Prices are going up with the technology that goes into designing these cars, let alone the options you can get. Next thing ya know, these cars will be expensive even used.

Ford is really raping gm in performance these days. The vette and some ugly ass box called a camaro is all GM fans have left. Ford has a twin turbo 6, some nice ass turbo volvo engines, 5.0, 6.2 liter raptor engine, 5.4 supercharged.

Ah well whatever, I was raised on GM but that doesnt mean you should go blindly into the light of the messiahs new company. Look around and in almost ever class of car or truck you will find a better model made by a company other than GM.

If GM would use something other than Mayfield milk jugs for the plastic in their interiors, the perception of their quality would improve tremendously.

They've gotten better in very recent years, but still below a comparable Hyundai.

I agree 100%, GM needs a new game plan for sure. They don't have much out that really appeals to me at all anymore, their lineup is extremely weak compared to Ford's and even Daimler Chrysler in some aspects.

I'm going to have to argue that the Ford's 6.2 truck engine is no better than GM's 6.2 engine. GM's is more compact and should be lighter as well, and the performance difference between the two is negligable. The only reason I like the Ford 6.2 is because Ford puts it into a dedicated desert truck, while GM offers nothing in that department. GM's trucks are no less in the game than any other domestic manufacturer; other than the Raptor and Power Wagon, GM offers a comparable(+ or -) competitor for anything Dodge and Ford produce. As far as cars go, has everybody forgotten about Cadillac's complete turnaround? Looks like Buick is finally about to make the jump into 2010 as well. Sure GM killed off two of its best platforms in a single blow (Solstice/Sky's Kappa and, for the moment, G8's Zeta) but it doesn't mean that they've got nothing else to offer the world. Instead of making everybody wait even longer for a competitor for the Mustang, they released the current Camaro despite weight issues and it's been a hit, while they're already planning a much more performance-oriented (read: lighter) setup for the Gen 6. Yeah, for the moment the Camaro doesn't offer the level of performance that Ford has available in the Mustang. So what? It'll come. For now, that's irrelevent. There is a ~$30k Camaro that competes well enough with the ~$30k Mustang, and the $45k Mustangs? GM has the Corvette in that price range, so it isn't that critical. Those who want pure performance will buy the performance car, those who want a pony car will buy a pony car, and those who want a performance pony car will either buy a GT500 or build up their SS, R/T, SRT, or GT.

Oh and btw the new Boss 302 seems pretty cool to me for now, we'll have to wait and see.

gm has the 6.2, 7.0, lsa, ls9. the raptor engine is nothing special at all, in fact being so bulky an complex gives gm's 6.2L truck engine a clear advantage.

the only thing i agree about is the camaro. they focused too much on making it a touring car for 40 year old men. ford has done a fantastic job building an eco-box spots car with a pretty horse on the front. women bought piles of those things over the years and i believe will continue to do so.

Exactly. GM was obviously looking into just one thing when building the trans am/camaro...PERFORMANCE. They didnt look at the whole picture, and didnt give much detail or thought to any other part of the car. A rear end that can blow out on STOCK power, headlight sometimes dont pop up (trans am), t-tops leak, power windows go out, hatch rattles etc... Ford built and overall better car than GM. Although it didnt have the kind of power the LS1's had, they were overall a better and practical daily driver over our cars and thats why people bought them.

I hate to say it, but I dont see how ppl can buy the new camaro. It weighs as much as a tank and looks like garbage. It might be cranking out 415 horses, but the weight is whats killing them. I think the vette is the only hope GM has on the mustang.

Yes GM has the bigger and badder engines but at what price? A new baseline vette is nearly $20k more than the mustang. Again, ford is thinking more practical about their cars unlike GM. Price was the key factor in why the trans am/camaro went outta production.

Exactly, the ls series is GMs only shining light in performance. But what good is a engine like that when put in heavy, ugly, cheap cars. Ford is starting to bring over euro ideas, cars and engines. And they are far better than these American versions. Gm is brining over aussie cars and ideas but somehow they get deluded along the way and turn out to be cheaper not as interesting versions of the aussie cars.

It would seem to me, at least in the near term, the Camaro is outselling the Mustang:

Yeah i have pretty much givin up on gm. I have worked for a couple of gm dealers of the past 6ish years and have personally seen what goes wrong with mostly all the models. The front ends on half tons are extremely weak. Upper ball joint are gone in 40k miles. Lambda platforms ie: Traverse, acadia, enclave are a joke. Oil leaks, cams that eat into the heads, cam chains that stretch. Steering gears that make noise and move in there mounts. Hell my soon-to-be stepdad has a 2010 1 ton ram and i would take it over a silvy hd anyday, well untill i c how well the new hd chassis holds up

GM is too consumed by bean counters.

Case in point is the F body. Think GM didn't know about all the stuff that would become an issue?

Why the weak 10 bolt, when stock power would destroy it?

Because the percentage that would fail before warranty was up was going to be very small. After warranty, GM didn't care.

T-top leaks/rattles due to loose chassis?

Same thing. It would get past warranty before becoming a financial burden on GM.

Piston slap? Same thing.

And of course the famous glue that leaks through the roof panel, after the warranty runs out.

Maybe with the new generations GM will build a good car first and win back some buyers.

i think you guys are all fucky about this. i agree the camaro is a little heavy and looks are subjective. but when the camaro was released in 2010 it beat everything in its class-- including destroying the 2010 mustang.

so ford, after a LOOOOOOOOOOOONG time coming finally releases a GT that can compete. and you know what? good job on them. but it's been one year that ford can compete and we're all throwing in the towel? fuuuck.

this is fords latest and greatest against some of gm's weaker older tech. there is piles they can do with just the stroke of a pen to drastically exceed the 2011 mustangs performance. it's not like GM is hurting to make extra hp--- they have many better engines. and lets not forget the rumoured 5.5L DI 450+ hp coming out. and there have been confirmed sightings of gm testing the z\28.


my only question is how long will gm make us wait before they make their move?

Its not just the pony class ford is whooping gm in. Pretty much all there cars are nicer with better options and better quality/materials. GM uses some of the cheapest looking plastic in the world for interiors. The pony cars a very small small area of these two companies. IMO Ford is winning in just about every other class aswell. Caddi is about the only car gm makes that has a proper interior.The vettes interior is low class compared to its rivals but it gets away with it because it offers 200,000-1,000,000 performance for 70-100k. The other cars dont get off so easy. The cobalt is a joke, even the SS has one of the most bland cheap interiors i have ever sat in.

Did I miss something, thats from Jan 2010 and the 2011 Mustang was not even released until just recently. A quick google showed Camaros outselling Stangs thur July of this year by about 6,000 but I firmly believe the Mustang will move ahead in sales when the 5.0's are actually on the lots and some dealing can be done. I agree with the folks who think GM does not have a desirable product set offering, with 4 brands you would think there would be far more.

The gt500 is still cheaper but not by much. I agree that the 2010 camaro came out and was faster than the 2010 mustang gt. 6 months later ford releases the 5.0 and GM fans are crying and moaning. They cant accept the fact ford has built a better and faster car with much much less displacement.

I will be graduating from high school this year and going to college, all of the above reasons are why I'm leaning much more towards getting a Mach 1/GT for a college commuter instead of an LS1 F-Body. Those cars to me seem as if they are much better built in terms of quality when compared to the F-Body's.

It's going to be interesting to see in the upcoming years to see the problems that may develop with the 5th gen's versus the new generation GT's. I'm wondering if GM turned themselves around in the quality/longevity department, I'm doubtful about it though.

The 99-04 stangs arent much better. Cheap plastic that comes apart, 2 of my friends door panels are seperating, the cheap t3650 is well known for 2nd or 3rd gear going out before 100kmiles. 80s-early 2000s are the reason American cars are known for being cheaply made. The American companys were just churning out crap cars.

Ya I love how the "F-series is the #1 Selling Truck for the last 1000 Years" Combine the sales of the Sierra and Silverado, and ya, not so much. GM's 1500's dominate the market. GM gives the consumer a choice of which grill they prefer; a Sierra or Silverado.

we had an '06 lt, bought new. Probably the worst new car ever, barring (most?) yugos. In the interior alone, the head unit failed along with the sub and three speakers. They wouldn't replace the head unit because they could get it to temporarily work sometimes. Wiper switch and motor, three window switches or motors, not sure, two door seals, all the silver interior paint would come off, torturous seats. Won't even mention mechanicals.. I feel sorry for whoever carmax sold it to

The 2010 GT with the handling package has better handling than the SS, no doubt. The braking difference is negligable, being within 5-10 feet on the R&T tests while C&D had them being the same. Obviously a drag race was a loss for the 2010 GT. But the rest of the results were largely subjective: Motor Trend's writers were initially impressed by the 2010 SS's styling, while the writers and R&T and C&D were not. Personally I would rather drive the GT stock, but I'd rather have the SS if I were going to be modding up. Bottom line is that GM came out of the gates with a competitor when they released the new Camaro. Will I be buying one? Absolutely not. Is it a competent performance car? Sure.

Because the 2010 camaro came out and everybody wanted the new gen camaro. Now the 2011 stang is out. It would be more accurate to compare the numbers at the end of 2011 and see where they stand new models vs new model. Anytime you discontinue a classic car lie kthe camaro for 8 years and then brign a whole new model to the floor people will be interested but when the hype calms down that when you know if you really built a good selling car.

2011 has the all new 5.0, so now thats 'all the hype' and for good reason. So its definitely will outsell the camaro. Mustang has alway had the appeal of female's and thats the reason they sell so many, IMO. I don't think quality has anything to do with it. Neither car is even close to being perfect.

GM does things differently. Camaro and Firebird are basically the same car. Include the Capri numbers along with the Mustang if you like.

I agree that the ergonomics of the Gen5 Camaro are ridiculous. That plus the interior appearance and the weight turned me off to the car the first time I saw it. Can I afford one? Yes. Do I prefer GM cars over any other manufacturer? Yes. Will I ever own a Gen5 Camaro? Unless I end up with an extra huge wad of cash to fix everything about the car that I don't like, no. I want a car I don't have to redesign to appreciate. We'll see how the Gen6 turns out.

Point of the matter is that ford has finally built a better car than GM and GM fans cant accept the fact. Does it really matter if it took them 1000 years? The new camaro isnt a big improvement. From most of my readings they run about the same time as the LS1 camaros, and look a lot more ugly, and cost more.

I tested a 5.0 with the "track package" in Tampa only cause the chevy dealer wouldn't. Let me test anything they had. The one I tested had a 6 speed and for what it was it was pretty bad from the factory. The salesman and I had fun playing with it...

Yeah, Car and Driver actually predicts the base Boss 302 will be around 36k, and most likely upwards of 40k for the Laguna Seca. Which is sort of like you said, getting up there in GT500 territory.

But then you have to take into consideration that this car is stripped of some of the creature comforts that you would see in the GT's and GT500's so it may be geared towards a slightly different buying crowd than that of the other Mustangs. And on top of that it will be a limited production car from what I've heard, so to some people this car may be worth the money, which is cool and I can understand the reasoning.

But I'm with you, me personally, I wouldn't buy one if I knew I had the money for a GT500. This car is still cool as hell though.

Yeah, not a fan of the paint scheme on the Laguna Seca, the base Boss isn't too bad but I hate the wheels. I'm sure Ford has many other paint schemes for this car that we haven't seen yet though.
