Michael Jordan, from this era. Bo Jackson a close 2nd.

Wow pure?? Well I think it would depend on the sport..
Muhammad Ali,Lou Gehrig,Jim Brown,Michael Jordan,Wayne Gretzky,Tiger Woods,Lance Armstrong,Michael Schumacher,Dale Earnhardt.. The list can go on IMO. I dont think you have one pure athlete for all. And it also depends on what one person calls a sport compared to another.
How in the world can you even call Dale Earnhardt or any other driver an athlete. While driving at that level does take alot of skill and not everyone can do it, that dosent make them athletic at all. A real athlete is good at alot of different sports. Most pro athletes were stars on all the high school sports they played but were much better at one than the other. I dont think I could see John Force playing football. I dont think they are in any way shape or form athletes. A huge part of becoming a pro driver has nothing to do with you driving ability but depends on who you are and who you know. Do you really think that driving was just breed into all those Pettys.
I would say Bruce Lee is the best ever at martial arts. I wouldn't say Bruce Lee is the best pure athlete ever.
His skills in martial arts may or may not take him very far on a team sport. When I think martial arts, I think of self defense, not a competitive sport. That may or may not be true, just my opinion
Again though, not being disrespectful towards Bruce Lee or martial arts, I have great respect for both. Its just not within my realm of competitive sports or what I was thinking for pure athlete.
You guys can't be serious with your responses so far.
My pick?
Vladimir Putin
The fuckers 57 years old and check the shit he does for fun:

 @ Iroc
Joe Mauer apperently he could have played football or basketball or maybe it was hockey too
Jim thorpe without question is the best pure athlete, check it out on wikipedia.

Thier skill in driving is exactly what makes them athletes. How can you call a golfer an athlete? How can you call a basketball player an athlete just because he can jog back and forth bouncing a ball? To be an athlete you need strength, endurance, quick reflexes, and be skilled at whatever activity youre performing. A driver is all of these. Strength...stock cars have only had power steering for a few decades now and occasionaly it still fails. Ever drive a car without power steering? Endurance....Imagine sitting in your car in the sun for 4 or 5 hours without air conditioning. The temps inside the cars reach 110 degrees on a regular basis.Drivers regularly lose up to 10 pounds in fluid especialy during the hot months, in one race. When they talk on tv about the air conditioning in the car all it is is a hose pulling in air from outside. Now imagine driving in that heat in rush hour traffic and the other cars dont have brake lights or turn signals. Which brings me to reflexes. You have to have a sharp eye and quick reflexes to avoid some of the accidents that happen in a split second at over 190 mph. And if you knew anything about the drivers most of them have a regular workout schedule. Thats how Mark Martin is still competitive. And not all but most drivers did play baseball or some other sport in school. Dale Jarrett was a baseball star and Kyle Petty played football. And just because you excell at a sport in school doesnt mean that is your destiny. There is a player on the Cardinals football team who had a baseball scholarship at WVU. All physical attributes are part of being an athlete. But a true athletes most powerful tool is his brain. You may be able to throw a 100mph fastball but youre not an athlete if you cant put it over the plate. Running 100 yards in under 10 seconds does you no good if you cant avoid a tackle. This is growing longer so Im gonna wrap it up. I had to laugh a few months ago when they were calling Tiger Woods one of the worlds greatest athletes. If golf is a sport or an athletic event, then so is a race. Know the difference between football, baseball, basketball and autoracing? Football basketball and baseball only take one ball.
Fuck Tiger woods.
I've read about Jim Thrope, but never seen him perform.
I'd have to say a guy like Barry Sanders, O.J. Simpson, Lawrence Taylor, Ronnie Lott or Champ Bailey are pure athletes. The RBs and DBs are probably the most athletic guys there are.
Ndamukong Suh is a pure athlete as well, trapped in a massive body.
Football guys can excel at basketball too and can usually jump through the ceiling, so add in track and field. Quick, jump far and high.
What more do you need from an athletic stand point.
Dan Marjle is a good pure athlete, he does a lot of stuff.
Now back to the original post. The best pure athlete ever probably wouldnt have excelled in any one sport. He also wouldnt have to train or work out because hes the best pure athlete ever. So my vote would have to be Tarzan the ape man. But seriously if I had to think of someone who excelled in everything he did. Was extremely fast, very powerful and could turn on a dime.....Never got to see him play but would love for someone like him to come along today...Jim Brown. He only played 9 seasons and the seasons were shorter than they are now and hes still one of the all time greatest running backs.
Today, Lebron James
Yesterday, Michael Jordan
Weeks ago, Jim Brown
-Will
Wayne Gretzky.
Master Chief
bo jackson, jim brown, and current in sports athletes vernon davis, taylor mays, antonio gates, and chris johnson. you cant teach the speed mays, davis, and johnson have. especially with mayes being 6'3" 230 lbs and davis being 6'3" 250 lbs. mayes easil in the 4.3x 40 range on average, davis clocked at 4.38 40. not to mention the rumors of mays beating chris johnson's 4.29. also these guys shuttle drills also extremely quick for still being big men. endurance can be taught reflexes and speed cant. as far as the nascar thing. sounds like a midday drive with no ac in vegas with a rattle trap that hasnt been washed so you cant see the other cars lights lol jk. athleticism is never overlooked in football. there are many that play multiple sports while in college and do well in both now. though none have played 2 pro sports and been successful in quite a while but college isnt anywhere close to high school where the teams are guaranteed to have walk ons and most walk ons cant play for shit. while college the walk ons can actually play.
Betty White
There are just to many sports to be discussing who is the greatest. There is no single athlete today that is good or equally good in all sports. But yes a lot of the stars today excelled in many sports before they became pro.
Lebron was also good in football (I think soccer to but dont quote me on it)
Jordan was also pretty good in baseball (I am surprised Jeter or A-rod are not on the list)
But I will tell you one think. Most of the stars today didnt do so well in school.
I second Jim Brown.
Larry Bird
IROC is my favorite

My first car didn't have AC or power steering. I used to spend hundreds of hours cruising in the country during the summer with that thing. So i guess that makes me pretty close to being a athlete the same as a pro driver than right. JK. I would be more willing to believe that drivers were athletes if it was not such a family affair. There is a reason that all those Pettys were pro drivers and a big part of it is not because they had more athletic ability than other drivers it was because of who they were related to.
1. Walter Payton
2. Barry Sanders
I would say Michael Jordan, but I lost a little respect for him when he and Reggie Miller got into that slap fight many years ago...two professional athletes that don't know how to throw a punch and fought like a couple of fat women on Jerry Springer..:lmao:
Possibly Carl Lewis... He qualified for five different Olympics which is a very extended period of excellence.
Decades ago there was a television show called Superstars or something like that which featured great athletes from different sports competing in athletic events. The show was a farce (of course) but I remember Joe Frazier barely making it from one end of the pool to another in a swimming competition... It was fun television back in the 1970s when I was a teenager.
Jean Claude Killy also comes to mind as a very gifted and smart athlete...
I noticed that there all male athletes no female athletes? and Betty White dont count Nhra Firebird
I don't think there is a definitive answer for this one. As it has been said b4, it depends on the sport. It's almost like asking who is the hottest porn star
Jim thorpe won 2 olympic gold medals and played professional football, professional baseball, and professional basketball.if you remember jordan tried baseball and was a very average double a player, but the greatest basketball player ever! Btw deion sanders is the only athele to play in a super bowl and world series so I would put primetime in the top 5 best athlete list
Exactly my point...it's kinda subjective:

Just examples
Twice Ive heard "Those Pettys" What made the Pettys was Lee was the first "Professional" stock car driver. Meaning he did it for a living. Everyone else drove as a hobby. Also if you go back and look at the record books in the 60's and 70's when Richard drove, only about 5 or 6 cars ran every race of the season. Not really too difficult to win a championship. Kyle just kinda sucked. It is very difficult to pick the greatest of all time even just in one sport and one position like qaurterback. Stats dont tell the whole story. I think you actualy had to see them play. Statisticly Montana isnt the greatest qb. But to watch him play Id put him or Johny U as the 2 best. But as far as the single best athelete overall. Thats tough.
not really sure but when Brock Lesnar did that backflip on the top of the ring, that was amazing!
Michael Jordan
Bo Jackson - 90 yard TD runs, over 30 HR's in a season -
Phil Taylor
OJ Simpson, he outran the police longer than anyone else in the history of mankind.
Watch Shaq vs. He isnt great at any sport but does decent for someone who never trained in them. Johnny Tomac was a great mtn biker. He could show up at a race and win all the events. Shaun Palmer was a great athlete too.
I have to go with Bo Jackson. I saw him at Fenway when he was with the Royals and he made a simple grounder to short a very close play. Incredibly fast.
Jackson excelled in both football and baseball. While Jordan was the BEST basketball player ever, he pretty much sucked at baseball, and was not good enough to earn his pro card on the PGA tour
I'm trying to keep in mind "athlete'', not "best at his/her sport"
IMO - I think it would have to be Babe Ruth. The man put baseball on the map and 75 years after the man played his last game, people are still talking about him. There was not a single person since did what The Babe did. And remember He was a pitcher for the first five years of being in the Majors. Imagine what his numbers would have been if he was just a fielder!

mariusz pudzianowski...
GSP....
amazing athelete...
i agree with you, however not many athletes have more then one focus.
Yes deon sanders, bo jackson and michael jordon both played 2 sports, however I dont consider baseball a challenging athletic sport.
GSP, i listed because yes at MMA and body training he does excell. But mostly i listed him because GSP is trained by Olympics trainers, who have stated he is the best athletic specimen they have ever seen and gsp excells at everything he tries... (article i read in mens health or something similiar)
Jim Thorpe ... Modern media hype has pushed him to the background. But if you grew up in the 60s and were asked this question, with out hesitation you would have said Thorpe and this was over 50 years after he had won two Olympic Golds.
In college he was the track team. For all intents and purposes he was the father of the NFL ... He made the Canton Bulldogs, the Bulldogs made professional football. There's a reason the NFL HOF is in Canton.
The only player in the modern era I would compare him to would be Bo Jackson.
He is not putting up near the numbers that he was during his PED era. In fact, hitters in general are not putting up the ridiculous numbers they were 5 years ago. Pitchers are back to dominating the game.
Also, agreed on the part of hearts being broken if there was a true list.
Well.....Since there are 3 top series with the top 2 series consisting of over 43 drivers(only 43 make the field every week) and there are dozens of smaller series all around the country Id say unless there are thousands of people on the PGA tour youre probably correct. Id bet its harder to make the PGA tour than it is to become lets just throw out...oh... a pro football player. But Id also be willing to bet that the worst pro football player could probably beat the worlds best golfer 1 on 1 in anything other than maybe golf.

I don't remember her name but back in the day there was a woman who dominated in several sports. I saw a show on espn about her. I know someone will find her and her stats...
Bo Jackson..
I knew someone would come through.
"The first to prove a girl could be a stud athlete, Babe Didrikson began as a muscular phenom who mastered many sports and ended as a brilliant golfer. An exuberant tomboy whose life was athletics, she was accomplished in just about every sport - basketball, track, golf, baseball, tennis, swimming, diving, boxing, volleyball, handball, bowling, billiards, skating and cycling. When asked if there was anything she didn't play, she said, "Yeah, dolls."
As a teenager she knew her life's ambition. "My goal was to be the greatest athlete who ever lived," she said.
The Associated Press voted her the Greatest Female Athlete of the first half of the 20th century. The wire service also voted her Female Athlete of the Year six times - once for her track dominance and five times for her golfing prowess.
Babe single-handedly won the 1932 AAU championships, which served as Olympic qualifying, on July 16 in Evanston, Ill. She scored 30 points, eight more than the runner-up team, which had 22 athletes. In a span of three hours, she competed in eight of 10 events, winning five outright and tying for first in the high jump. She set world records in the javelin, 80-meter hurdles, high jump and baseball throw.
She turned pro in golf in the summer of 1947 after winning 17 of 18 tournaments."
Primetime is the only athlete to play in the super bowl and world series

Lights...she runs through my mind every minute of every hour of every day and she never gets tired.
OJ...great at football and the guy is a killer
Primetime is the most over rated player anyone has mentioned. He was good when he played for Atlanta. He really didnt do squat for Dallas or SF. The most over rated and over paid player in the NFL. But at least youll never hear him talk about how great he was.
Bo made the All star team in MLB and was an All Pro in the NFL. Deion won plenty of awards in the NFL but didn't win shit in MLB, he was a terrible baseball player. He stole some bases but had a lifetime batting average of .221(probably) and had a better chance of catching a fly ball with his cap instead of his brick glove.
I think the real reason he dabbled with baseball was so he wouldn't have to worry about 2 a days and all that hitting and tackling.
Woman athlete - Maybe Gail Devers? She set some record in 2007 at like 40 years old...with Graves Disease
For male...I'd throw out Lance Armstrong's name too. Dude won 7 consecutive 2200 mile bicycle races and had his brain and nuts cut on...just saying
I always lol at his quote from dodgeball:
Quote:
Lance Armstrong: Could I get a bottle of water. - - Hey, aren't you Peter La Fleur?
Peter La Fleur: Lance Armstrong!
Lance Armstrong: Yeah, that's me. But I'm a big fan of yours.
Peter La Fleur: Really?
Lance Armstrong: Yeah, I've been watching the dodgeball tournament on the Ocho. ESPN 8. I just can't get enough of it. But, good luck in the tournament. I'm really pulling for you against those jerks from Globo Gym. I think you better hurry up or you're gonna be late.
Peter La Fleur: Uh, actually I decided to quit... Lance.
Lance Armstrong: Quit? You know, once I was thinking about quitting when I was diagnosed with brain, lung and testicular cancer, all at the same time. But with the love and support of my friends and family, I got back on the bike and I won the Tour de France five times in a row. But I'm sure you have a good reason to quit. So what are you dying from that's keeping you from the finals?
Peter La Fleur: Right now it feels a little bit like... shame.
Lance Armstrong: Well, I guess if a person never quit when the going got tough, they wouldn't have anything to regret for the rest of their life. But good luck to you Peter. I'm sure this decision won't haunt you forever.
^ Hilarious
