They are indeed needed. Try turning a corner with summer tires on the front when it's 15 degrees out. You'll be pushing the front into a snow bank like a fwd going to fast around a curve! Not to mention trying to stop at and speed on snow.Quote:

well if one is foolish enough to speed on snow then panic break as a result of not leaving enough distance between the car(s) in front/around them, then they get what's coming to them. a few wrecks here and there by the people who claim to be 'above average/cautious' drivers really just clears the roads for those who truly are above average drivers. perphaps a hard lesson learned, but more often that not, it isn't...Quote:

But your breaking distance and cornering ability really sucks with summer tires in the front. I used to do that all the time, and never had much problems, but when I tried out snow tires on all 4's it was like I put 4x4 in the car and could stop in hard pack snow like it was 80 degrees out and only wet roads.
