Matt, yes, downshifting from 55 (2nd gear) into first would nuke your engine, it would be off the chart of 7000rpm+.
some cars are different. i have an 6spd and 3.42 rear end. I can run 1st gear to 50+mph @ 6000rpm, 2nd gear to 75+mph @ 6000rpm, and 3rd gear to 100+mph also around 6000rpm. but my car is modded and tuned...
here's a quick tip:
when you're bout to downshift, put the clutch in, punch the gas and get the rpms up to 4.5-5 k or so, then u can dump the clutch into the new gear selected. This saves clutch ware if you "rev Match"
THE MORE YOU KNOW
NO, that's how you get your clutch to stick to the floor board and it wont come up till it feels like it. You've got to use the best judgement when rev matching to get it where it will be after the shift has been made, this will produce the least jerking and wear on your car. Dumping the clutch is not really good for it at all.
At an autoX you will be mostly in 2nd gear. The camaro is at an advantage because you're not hitting the rev limiter at 60 like most of the other cars. Only at really low speed corners will you get to first gear and you won't be shifting into first until you have slowed the car down.
Read up on heel and toe shifting and then practice it before you hit the track. After you get comfortable at the autox do a track day. These cars are fun at the track.
alittle off topic but i know a guy that has an 02 ss with patriot heads and a hot came (dont know duration) and he and his buddy (01 mustang gt vortech supercharged) were gonna run them on a local highway (370). it would be from i believe an 80mph punch. he put it into second, locked the rear end up, a few seconds later two beautiful cars were totalled. it really is all about feeling, and alittle common sense.
Let me just say that at around 75mph in 3rd, I 'downshifted' to 2nd (unintentionally). Back tires broke loose, and got sideways. Tach bounced off the limiter, but only for a second or two before I cought it. Wasn't to fun.
As far as speeds, I personally shift by sound. I am far from an autoXer, and lean much towards a drag racer, but shifting is all in teh sound/feel. If the engine sounds and feels like it needs to be shifted, then do it. That's not to say that you should downshift to 1st if your at 5000 in 2nd. It takes some getting used to, but you'll hear what the motor wants to do.
Chris
So you're basically saying don't be afraid of the rev limiter...???
the rev limiter isnt supposed to scare you, its meant to save you. it wont hurt the car at all. unless you just let it bounce off the limiter for a while. but yeah dont be afraid of it. Personaly when i race i hit the limiter once in every gear before i shift, and if i dont hit the limiter i will be right on 6100 RPM.
why is everyone concerned about shifting at a certain mph and not rpm. shouldn't you be shifting at or near the peak of your power curve depending on cam/xmsn ratios. a specific speed shouldn't have anything to do with this right?
I think people just wanted to know how fast they COULD go in certain gears.
I don't think it was concerning when to shift but more when it is safe to downshift.
minesfasterx2, your rev limiter is at 6200 on a stock motor unless it has been bumped up a little via tune. The stock tach isn't the most accurate piece. Could easily be off 100-200 RPM's. :yup:
Also, figure out where you are before banging the limiter. You will get faster if you stay off the limiter.
puts a lot o wear on your clutch tho, i still just use the brakes
