How do I find out what the fine is?

Talk to a lawyer, that's free. They give Legal advice, LS1.com doesn't.
It sounds like you'd have a pretty easy case. I think the tickets are BS. How did he know about the light if it wasn't on?
If you were burning tires all the way up to 35mph, that's a little tough to fight, but if you accellerate fully even in a stock f-body, 35 is 1/2 way through first gear, not long enough to even determine that a race was going on IMO.
You could probably get by with out a lawyer, they'll over something low like "defective headlight" and call it good.
I had a local backup copy that you can download from:

I've added .txt versions of all .docs in the .zip for you.

If you're going the TBD route, yes, you should write it as you see it.
It's important to write down things you remember about the incident - cars around you, what you were doing leading up to the 'infraction', etc.
If you're not comfortable with it, talk with a lawyer to discuss your options. It sounds win-able - even if it costs you money, it'll save you in the long run (insurance).
Come to think of it, you should talk to a lawyer anyway.
Good luck,

Dude, definitely get a lawyer. At least consult with one. Talk to a couple in fact. Just grab a phone book and look them up. It may cost more but I can almost guarantee with a lawyer it won't be on your record. It sounds like a flimsy case for the cop, but it would help to have someone that knows the ins and outs of the legal system. My guess is lawyer costs would be somewhere around $300 there is a mandatory court fee which is like $180 in Illinois (not sure what Cali is). Then you have your ticket on top of that, which may or may not get thrown out, or reduced.
tl;dr
Municipal Court judges are the only judges that are not voted in. These pricks are on the cities payroll. There is a 99% chance that the ticket will stand if you take it to court and you'll be out of a good chunk of change from the lawyer. Best bet is to just pay it and be on your way.
I'll probably end up getting a lawyer, although i have no idea how much they cost it seems like the easiest and smartest way to go........any ideas on how much a lawyer does cost?
Jeesh tell me about it, so you think for the lawyer alone it will be around $300-$350, i'll officially get to talk to one on tuesday so I can find out then I was just looking for ballpark figures.........that isn't too bad a price, of course that doesnt' include the fine correct? unless all the charges are dropped?
You'll have to pay court fees I'm pretty sure. They can be anywhere from $50 to probably close to $200. If you get a lawyer I know everything will be reduced if not dropped, so I'm going to say total, under $500. Honestly I don't think the cop has a shot in hell for the racing charge, because I've never heard of it. Racing is considered wreckless driving, and they would have impounded your vehicle, and you would've been arrested.
Check this out. I'm pretty sure you're going to be fine.
