bump...and to move it to a new page..
This was my favorite support to get when I used to call in close air support. 2nd was Apaches. The A10 is always king to me.
Useless trivial fact: The Russian tank commanders call this aircraft the "Devils Cross" because of one of the maneuvers (I think the hammerhead ) it does to get back on target and they know that this is the last thing they see before dying.
From the bottom it appears as a three-bar, Russian Orthodox style Cross.
I've sat in the control tower and watched the A10 doing gunnery practice at the range near Savannah GA. (It was a great day. First F-18s, then F-16s, then OV-10 Bronco's, and then A-10s.)
It doesn't fly backwards, but you can see the aircraft pause in the air when the gun fires.
Seeing what the practice slugs, not the depleted uranium ones, did to the tanks and APCs on the ground made me think I would never want to be in a tank with one of those around.

The A-10 saw combat for the first time during the Gulf War in 1991, destroying more than 1000 Iraqi tanks, 2000 military vehicles, and 1200 artillery pieces. A-10s shot down two Iraqi helicopters with the GAU-8 gun. A-10s had a mission capable rate of 95.7%, flew 8100 sorties, and launched 90% of the AGM-65 Maverick missiles fired in the conflict.
What if you put an A-10 on a treadmill ??
Don't get me wrong... the A10 is awesome... but...
