during the last couple miles of my road trip today i started losing oil pressure in my z28. its been idling around 30 and when i hit the gas it drops down to 0 then starts going back to 30. any ideas on what this problem may be? anything i can do for a quick fix that can last me till i get back home, 450 miles?
nothing to give you a quick fix,...its either your sending unit going bad or oil pump.......either way you must figure out which one it is b/c of the damage you could cause......it not worth to just cross your fingers and hope for the best....unless you really want to massive failure of you engine
any idea how much something like this costs?
well a sending unit, if thats what it is, and you do it yourself is prob like 100 bucks.......the oil pump is prob like 300-500 if you get it from GM and install it yourself....and thats gonna take some time.......
you need to be very careful though....dont push this issue,...your talking a couple hundered buck compared to 5000 for a new engine
oil pressure gauge sending unit, as mentioned above. my z was doing the same thing. took it to my mechanic and said thats what it was. my mechanic didnt charge me, so i dont know what it would of cost.
Oil pressure sending unit at Autozone is 10 bucks! It's worth a try to change it on the spot and see if that fixes it or not.If not, I would not drive it.U haul it back home and fix or pay the bucks to have out of town dealer fix it.
turns out the oil gauge leaked all the oil. getting that worked on now, and keeping my fingers crossed hoping that they wont have to put in a new pump. still an unnecessary expense. guess i got to put off that shift kit for a bit

well for now its just the pump, still waiting for a call from the mechanic on the final word on how much its going to cost me, but yeah ill be happy if i dont have to replace the pump. its weird too cause it started crapping out on me at the end of my trip from buffalo, to boston. im just lucky i was stuck in traffic and got to take it easy on the engine. mechanic said i had about a quart of oil left in itQuote:

good job firestone. freaking douchebags in boston. on the way back to buffalo i lose oil pressure again. so i pull off the 90 get towed to a nearby firestone. have them check it out. turns out the leak wasnt coming from the oil switch but from where the dipstick goes into the block or something like that. apperently the shop that put on my headers forgot to bolt the dipstick tube back to the manifold, and it popped out. fortunately the guys at this firestone were able to find this, hooked me up with a quick fix by zip tying the dipstick tube to the ac condenser. luckily it held for 300 miles and i managed to get home ok. so now tomorrow i got to go to the local firestone, and bitch them into crediting 305 towards this repair cause their buddys in boston fixed wat wasnt broken.
