Pulling engine

I'm trying to get my engine out (ls1, 99 camraro z28). Problem is, I never reallized how many little dumbass things they put on newer cars. I went out and got the fuel line disconnect tool, but are there any other tools I'll need ("specialty" that is). And whats the best order to remove everything? My engine is F'd so I just want it out but I didn't reallize half the damn engine is inside the car. Just any advice please. And to think, the biggest reason I got the camaro was I figured they made it easy to work on - I don't think those kind of cars exist any more

to get it out from the top, you'll have to remove the heads. to remove it in one piece, you have to drop it from the bottom. you can click the pink banner and see some of the work i've done. i haven't removed the engine block out yet, but i've done heads and cam.

It's easy to work on if you have a lift. The whole powertrain and front suspension drop out from the bottom as a unit, then you pull the engine out of the subframe.

Of course without a lift, it's a lot tougher...

this might be a dumb question, but are there any how-to's for ls1's beyond changing your oil? (yes i'm a little frustrated, i had an 89 thunderbird sc and i've never had an easier time finding info)

installuniversity.com ls1howto.com ls1camaro.net all have how tos in them. To pull the motor from the top, you do not need to remove the heads. You may need to remove the intake, but its pretty straight foward. As for specialty tools, you may need a stubby 15mm. Not too much special tools other than the fuel disconnect. Your gonna need a pulley puller to get the crank pulley off.

Well no lift, so i guess its coming out from the top. Just take intake off (inluding maf and or manifold?), unbolt headers/motor mounts/tranny, use pulley puller for pulley, slide engine forward and up. this sound about right?

Don't forget the radiator. You may have to move the condensor out of the way.

Gotta come out I believe to pull the motor from the top.


I pulled mine in a one car garage from the bottom. Rented a hoist...lifted the car off the k-member with the motor/tranny sitting on it.

would it be easier to pull from the top or bottom? i have noe lift, a 2 ton jack, and 2 jacksdtands, its looking like it'ss be prettty easy top get from the top, am i right or am i way over thinking this?

you dont have to pull the heads to take it out from the top i have mine out now one way is as good as the other

I pulled mine from the top. Wasn't as hard as I thought it was. Just have extra eyes and hands to help you out.

You can pull the motor and tranny from the top, just remove all of the accessories, disconect everything....and take the heads off so it will clear the windshield cowl. AND you can put it back in that way too with the tranny on the motor. I have done it 4 times now in my own car. Anyone who says that you cannot remove the tranny with the motor, doesnt know wtf they are talking about and is full of shit. But you do have to remove the heads first.......and take the hood off....pm me if you have any ?'s

Rented a hoist to lift the car up. Used the strut tower brace to lift it.
You can leave all the accessories on this way...I just didn't. I had someone wanting my old cam before I was ready to pull the motor.

So, judging by the photo, you jacked the car way up on stands, supported the engine and front subframe with the hoist, then lowered it out of the body.

The hoist is actually holding the car up. Chain is wrapped around the strut tower brace. Basicly unbolted the motor while the car was low, and pulled the car up over it.

Do you have to disconnect and drain the brake lines to drop the suspension? I pulled the motor out from the top, and there's no way in HELL I'm putting it back in that way! I'd like to just pull the tranny out, bolt it to the new motor, and drop the suspension like you did.

I don't have a strut tower brace in my V6, so what would you suggest I tie my hoist to?

Last question: how did you roll the motor out from under the car with the hoist right in front of it?! (edit: nevermind, I didn't notice the jack stands under the car)

Brake lines did need disconnected.
I forgot about them...and ruined the stock ones.

Radiator support seems like a good place from what I have read. I would double check that though.

I suppose you could also use a lift tab and chains attached to 1-2 of the bolts that attach the strut, basically pulling from the same place as with a strut tower brace. My guess is that since the struts support the weight of the car, they would be stouter than the radiator support.

But I've never pulled a motor from anything made in the last 20 years ;)
