How fast can you go w/o being required to have a roll cage?
Do you know what time that would be in 1/8th mile
That's a tough one to judge because some cars are strong in the 1st 1/8 and some cars are stronger in the last 1/8. An approx. estimate is high 7 to about 8 seconds at the 1/8.
Now I'm going to throw you off for a minute. Here again in most tracks in Michigan, just because your car is capable to run in the elevens in the 1/4, if you only run the 1/8 you don't need a roll cage. The breaking point for what speed you have to have a roll cage in your car for the 1/8 mile is I'm not sure. I know a co-worker of mine has a 572 cu nova that runs in the upper 10's in the 1/4 but as long as he runs and keeps it at the 1/8 mile and shuts down they will let him run his car.
Hope this helps some.
Thanks, every little bit counts. Are roll cage requirements specific to the track or are they universal?
For 1/4 mile I believe the NHRA rule is anything 11.49 or faster. At one of the tracks I have been to which is an 1/8 I have been told 6.5 or faster, oddly enough though that is the same time that you need a helmet for. For 1/8 mile you might want to call your track and check up with them.
The cage requirements increase as the times decreases . . . 4 point, 6 point, 8 point, 10 point.
Some tracks will let you run during open track nights, but it you break under 12 seconds, they will sometimes red flag you for the next time telling you that a roll cage will be required. :(
