To give you an idea on my experience. Wiggins Racing and Performance in Vanceboro,NC. William is a good fellow and does outstanding work. A little know and well equipped shop out in the sticks (in the floor dyno) and a heavy local workload. $650 for cam swap, beehive springs and new push rods + tune (my parts).
Later down the road I'm planning on swapping the heads for a nice set of AFR's... But right now just looking for the cam, I like that price! Good to know!
Just about any cam you are going to put in will need new springs. With that in mind you might want to just wait a bit longer and do the heads and cam at the same time. I am about to get my cam, pump, chain, and springs done for around $500 that includes a touch up tune as well, normally I think that would be closer to $800 with a tune if I was my first time to get a tune.
Thats a good price. Why not have install party instead? Go to ls1howtos.com get the tools, get some friends, get some beers and BBQ and bust it out. You will get better satisfaction from it, plus you will have a better understanding of further mods.
Just my .02 cents though
For me personally I had planned on waiting a while and doing just that. However, I have had a change of plans and decided that I wanted the cam now :) If I had the space and tools doing it myself would be my first option, just no real space to do it in my apartment's parking lot.
