Snow Tires

My SS must make it to the Post Office every work day no matter how much snow is on the road. Blizzacks solved the problem on the 96 Impala SS, now replaced by a nice (new to me) 2000 Camaro SS 6 speed.

What have others done to "go" in the snow?

Garaging her and taking another vehicle IS NOT an option.

I own Blizacks in the 15 inch and 17 inch variety. I do not know what rim would look the most at home on the Camaro with a downsized (narrow 225/45 - 15 or 17) snow tire? Will 15" camaro Rims work on a 2000 SS?

I run blizzacs on my formula. They are like a 235/60/16 or something like that. They are narrow and funny looking on it, but I can go through a foot of snow with them carefully as I found out last year.

I did well with the factory goodyear tires. I was driving cross country, got caught in a hellacious snow storm in Arizona around the grand canyon. There were semi trucks laying on their sides across the highway and everything. Non fun. The camaro did just fine; it was about 6" of snow, I'd say.

I run the stock 16x8" wheels off a camaro. I run 225/55/16 tires. I've ran Blizzak MZ-01's and really liked them. They got great traction, but cornering sucked, and dry traction wasn't great, but no worse than an all season tire. Now I'm running Good Year Ultra Grip GW3 and they are great for corners (considering they are winter tires) and have great dry and wet traction. They are not as good as the MZ-01 blizzaks in snow or ice though, but not far behind. I've also ran the Blizzak WS-50's and they were great in snow and ice, but sucked for dry, wet and cornering. I don't think they are the right choice for a Camaro. I've drove cars with the Perilli 210 snow sports and was not impressed by them. They good years were better than the 210's in all aspects. If I was going to get a new set I'd give the Blizzak LM-25's a try. I like the dry, wet, cornering of the GW3's, but would like to find more snow and ice traction although they are still good, but give up a bit much IMO.

I forgot with the snow tires I only put about 100pounds in back if we're expecting over 6" of snow which isn't often.

I recall a Craigs Listing for older Camaro rims which I thought were 15's. I had my doubts that was where I wanted to go. The 16's make good sense. I ran 15"WS-50's on my Impala SS and it was all out of sorts at anything over minivan mode.

That said it was like a 4X4 in snow - almost unstoppable, but not what you'd want to deal with day in and day out on dry roads.

Glad I could be of help. Yeah, the WS-50's are good for econo cars or mini vans, but that is all. Any 93-02 16x8" fbody rims should be good. Get the aluminum ones for they don't rust. The ones I'm running are off a 94 Z28. If I don't get a winter car for next winter I want to sell them and get stock T/A ones for people stop making fun of me!

Blizzacks are awesome, my friend at work had them on his sunfire, he gave me a ride home from work one night when I left my car there cause it was to bad for me, must have been a foot of snow on the ground and he just went through it like nothing, front wheel drive of course. I asked how he did on the gravel roads at his house, said he made it 20 feet to his garage before he got stuck in a 24inch deep snow drift!

I'd have to go check what snow tires I got on the trans am, all I know is they are pirellei and have like a one inch huge ass groove down the middle wich essentially seperates my 275-40-17 into two different tires like two 137 wide tires. Will give my review after first big storm!

The narrower 225's will still allow for decent cornering and dig into the snow to find grip not like 275's. The MZ-01 Blizzaks have a groove in the middle too, but I didn't miss it at all. That's the part of the tire that had the most wear.

Anyone run just 2 snow tires instead of 4?

Blizz LM-25's in the 225/40 version were shoehorned onto STOCK 2000 SS 10 spoke rims . . .looks a bit funny - rims wider than the rubber - gotta stay WAYYY away from the curbSS , but I expect to go in the snow!

They are a bit narrow for the 9.5" wide rim, but hope they work for you.

In the snow. Handling in any weather will be odd especially if it's on a f-body or other sports car that puts more demand on tires due to the extreme difference in tread compounds and traction capabilities in different temperatures. Long gone is the day of the old knobby snow tires that just went on the rears.

I've run blizzaks on my personnal vehicles with excellent success. I have used Goodyear Ultragrips on the company car. They bight good but where quick.

Were you running the regular Ultra-grips or the GW3's? They are totally different tires.

I used Blizzaks on my 04 GTO for two Winters, they worked great.
