could be the gauge? do your lights dim and such?

Start the car, disconnect the battery, turn on the headlights and AC. If it runs fine it's probably your gage.
-
Disconnecting the battery on a running car is a no no. That was true for 70's vehicles but not today.
-
Why's that? I've been doing it for years without any issues. How's it any different than running one with a bad battery? It only takes a couple seconds to know for sure. Can't see irrepairable damages in under 30 seconds. Voltage spikes could cause damage if ran for an extended timeframe, but the car will die almost immediately if the charging circuit is bad. There would be minimal to no change in idle if it is good, and you'd know it is a bad gage.

the car really does run off the alternator anyway...bat is only used in start so maybe not a bad test. the voltmeter test only shows 12.1 v wile engine is running. no surge in power just loss in voltage slowly. pretty sure the gauge is ok cuz wen it reads dead my car wont start and matches what the voltmeter said wen tested. guess my only hope is to trace thru wires and find a dead spot wich i heard of today from a friend. thanx 4 inputs

so i replaced the "excitor wire".now voltmeter is fine once i start up. but when i take off the e-brake & hit the brakes it drops down 2 yellow. when a/c/ comes on its even worse....any guesses now? thanx

guess the batt has to charge. works fine now. so i recommend chekin that excitor wire. the little red one
