kind of a newbie question, but what exactly is a lid?
Goes on the air box..... the thing with "SLP" on it is a lid

ohh.. and what exactly does it do? i read a bout a lot of people changin their lids...? :dunno:
It creates a seal to make air flow through the filter. People change them because the stock lid has baffles in it and therefore restricts air flow. It's an easy and decently cheap way to free up horsepower.
Stock lids have baffles to quite down the flow of air thus reducing the flow which reduces hp.
heres a stock one.......

sorry i was getting a pic and didnt notice your post
so that SLP lid is an aftermarket one? what if you were to do that set up i seen a few people do with the dual filters?? do you still put a lid on that?
this is what i'm talking about -------->

no prob
No not on that setup because it's already sealed at the filter.
oh ok, is one of them better than the other?
SLP seems to give the least amount of hassles and it seals pretty good but it's all a matter of brand and opinion to me. I know SLP is about 102 bucks which isn't bad.
hmm okay :) so if you replace the stock lid do you have to replace the stock filter as well? or what do you have to do to get the most out of your intake? thanks for the help btw
No, you do not have to change the filter element.
The aftermarket lids will work with most filters.
You will not find noticable gains from changing the filter element itself, but some people like the K&N style. (I do not prefer to have my intake 'oiled' up.)
No you can use the stock filter with a lid. To get the most out of your intake your gonna need several things. Ported throttle body, Cam, Valvetrain (to handle the cam), Ported oil pump isn't a bad idea, Longtubes, ORY, Exhaust, and a tune to boot. I'm sitting at 400 rear wheel horsepower and still have the stock intake and I can still go a little higher in power with appropriate bolt-ons with this manifold.
An aftermarket Intake manifold isn't a bad investment though. F.A.S.T. make an awesome manifold for about 900.
so really changing the stock filter won't matter? is that F.A.S.T an LS6 manifold? cuz somebody was telling me you could get one for like 40$ or something.. what is an ORY? sorry about all the questions i'm just kidna new with this... but thanks again
ls6 manifolds run about 300+ sometimes you can find them used.
ORY = off road y pipe. goes from the headers to the i pipe. with no cats, and not the meowing kind..
so is an LS6 manifold the best kind you can get? and what is the advantage to having an ORY over an X pipe?
LS6 mainfold is a stock manifold for an LS6 engine but it will fit on our LS1's it is not the best
but is pretty good for the price of around $400 new you can get it ported and polished for better performace.
X pipe is for true duals, y-pipe is for merging 2 pipes into 1
oh i get it.. so what would be the best manifold in your opinion? and if you could give me a link to where i could get them that would be great.. seriously this my last question :) thanks for bearing with me
In my opinion the F.A.S.T. intake manifold with the 90mm inlet is the best manifold you can get for our cars. Only problem is these are about 800 bucks, but you pay for the quality products. I'm sure you can buy it cheaper but this is just an example. http://www.ws6project.com/user_stor/...f416a99525a685
