700R4 or 4L60E or 4L80E???

Ok, im building an LQ9 408 stroker for my Sonoma GT that will have a 175 shot on it also.
I was originally going to try and keep my stock albeit rebuilt 700R4, but i think its a wise choice to upgrade to a newer electronic trans to go with the new motor, and cant decide if i actually need to go as far as a 4L80E or will the 4L60E be enough, i plan to run a 3200-3500 stall converter and 4.10 gears also.

Im sure i could have the 700 built the handle the power, but would i be better off with the newer electronic trans??

Are you kidding? 4L80E all the way. That motor on spray will eat the 4L60E up. 4.10 rear end w/a stall......Hmmm. Does the Sonoma have a 12 bolt? Sorry, I don't know Sonoma's @ all. If not, be sure to use one. I'd go 4L80E & be sure to put a nice big tranny cooler on it. Wow, that thing is gonna be a beast!

Well i have decided that the 80E is the best way to go, becasue of a cool new part i founds while surfing last night, its a formula one type paddle shofter that mounts to the steering wheel, very sweet set up.

So i figure in order to use that i have to have atleast a 60E, so i might as well just get the 80E even though it will suck up more power, but it is much more durable. I think i can still put 500 N/A to the wheels with the 80E.

As for the rear on my truck, its going to be a 71 Chrysler 8 3/4 489 case with a detroit locker and 4.10 gears, custom 30 spline moser axles and 9" housing ends and 12" Baer disk brakes.

So now i have a 700 that is for sale.

Where is the best place to get a good rebuildable 4L80E, or would all i need is a good stock trans with a shift kit and stall? Also is there a certain year that is better that another?

Good choice on the 80E. As mentioned & regardless of drivetrain loss, it is the right choice for the power. Do a web search for 4L80E vendors. Stock with a wake up kit sounds good to me. Don't know that you'll really need a shift kit. Also, the cooler is important. The stall manufacturer should be able to recommend the proper size. Am thinking 28,000 GVW or bigger.

Well , what is considered a good price when shopping for a good used 4L80E, and does it matter if it was originally behind a gas or diesel engine, also will a mid 90's 4L80E work with the Gen 3 6.0L iron block i have?? I mean it wont have the very top bell housing bolt but will it still work other wise or do i have to have one from say 2000 and up that was originally behind a 6.0L.

Also, for the amount of power my engine will be making, say 450-550 NA at the wheels and with the 175 shot on top of that. what all do i need to do to the trans to make it survive, just a good stock rebuild and a shift kit? Any internal parts need beefed up?

Can anybody tell me if a 92 4L80E will work behind the 6.0L im building. It is a Gm reman trans, but i can probably get a sweet deal on it, it has beed recently gone thru at a trans shop, so it may be good to go the way it sits.

I think i may work, but one thing i dont see in the pics is an VSS sensor on the tailshaft. Might just be to dirty.

I just don't know if it will work. Looks like it could work with minor mod's., but, don't know for sure. Try the LS1tech conversions section. Someone there will have probably done something similar to this. In regards to the capacity of the 4L80E, I'd say the rebuild & shift kit you are planning is enough. Good-luck.

Dont be selling the 60E short fellas....trannie cooler/stall/beef it up a tad with some trans go goodies and the 60E can put it to the ground....

Well i can have my 700 built to put it to the ground also, the question remains for how long will it live.

And i know nobody can reliably answer that, but im thinking either i spend the money now once, or spned it now on the 700 or a 60E and when it pukes i have to spend it all over again on the 80E.

dude go with a 700R4 ...lol
