No, you are not wasting your time at all.
You always want to keep your clear coat protected - no matter what the color.
My very first car was the same color, but without a clear coat. It took only a few months for the paint to dull.
My 2002 RS is silver and is kept outside. So far, no problems.
I claybar, polish and wax it only once a year.
claybar?
Waxing is never a waste, Its a must! Your car needs to be polsihed and wax regardless of the color, its an important part of maintaing a nice paint job. You will defiently be able to tell a difference once you do wax, compared to just wahing it. Waxing will give it a wet look and also provide protection to keep your paint looking great for years to come.
Claybars are great, this removes contamination, oxidation and other enviormental fallout. You will need to do this after washing and before polishing and waxing. Run your hand across your cars finish, if it feels rough like sand paper you need to clay the car, after claying the paint will feel buttery.

I think the wax worked well in my silver lol
Why would wax be a waste? Wax doubles not only as bringing out a deep color, but it also protects the paint. IMO, you should wax your car once every 30-40 days.
With the exposure our cars get to the elements, it's really a must.
P.S. I detail cars for a living
Absolutely waxing is important and it does make a difference in the look. Zaino products are the definite way to go!! No wax build-up and a deep shine.
All I use on mine is the Turtle Wax ice, Run it through the touchless car wash, dry it off and apply the ice stuff. Not the spray ice, the bottle one. Works great and makes the car shine.
