I have a stock 1998 trans am 6 speed I am getting a random misfire code. When I'm driving and I get the car in around 6th gear when the rpm is low the car hesitates and I can hear like a ticking coming from the motor. The car idles great and 1st threw 5 gear feels great aslong as I'm not crusing with the rpm close to 1000 it has new coils,wires,plugs,injectors,fuel pump,mas, map and o2 sensors and I'm still getting this problem I'm scared something is wrong with the heads please help
Regarding the ticking best thing would be to post a video (upload one on Youtube and copy url into thread) and go to the parts stores and pull the codes and post up here.
6th gear - IMHO you shouldn't be in 6th at 1000rpms, it boggs down till the rpms get at or above 1800. I would stay in 5th.
A couple of other ?? How many miles on it? Any mods? What were you doing prior to the issues and be honest, no judging here? Burn outs, high rev launches, bounced off the rev limiter? Each one of these can lead to a ticking issue that is serious.
If you're really concern that it's a bearing or something critical drain the oil into a clean pan and look for debris and/or cut the oil filter.

And it has around 125,000 on it and it's completely stock other than a magnaflow muffler but it has stock cats and stock exhuast manifolds

Please tell me you have fresh oil...may need to change it a few times like every 500 miles or run an oil cleaner like Marvels Mystery Oil (follow directions) and then change it. You could have some sticky/gummed up lifters that could account for the ticking noise.
Cars sitting that long take a while to work out the bugs.
Was the MAF cleaned? Random misfires are a bitch to pin down. Could be something as simple as a crack plug or clogged injector. Does it throw any codes?
Thats weird, I have perfect drivability in 6th @~1,000 rpm or so. Maybe the the cams on the 01-02's are better down low than the earlier LS1's?Quote:

Let's narrow this down a bit:
1. Did you install a GM replacement MAF, or one from an aftermarket vendor?
2. When you installed the new ignition wires, did you hear/feel one "click" as you pushed the boot onto each plug and two "clicks" as you pushed the wire onto each coil? If you do not specifically recall this, then remove and reinstall each plug wire (preferably with a dab of dielectric grease squirted into each boot) as per these instructions.
3. If the car sat as you described, I would strongly recommend running Chevron Techron Fuel System Cleaner at least twice. Follow the instructions and use one bottle for every 12 gallons of fuel.
4. If you run an oiled media style air filter, clean the MAF.
5. With the engine running, warmed up and in closed loop, go under the hood and manually increase your rpms by opening the throttle blade. Go slow and take the engine up to around 2,500 rpm. Do this a couple of times and see if the engine stumbles anywhere in this rev range. If it does, unplug the connector to your MAF and repeat this test a few times to see if the stumble goes away. (Note that this test will set your SES and you will need to clear it with a scan tool or disconnect the battery for a while).
6. If the stumble still exists, check the bolts that secure your throttle body to the intake, check your hose clamps on the air lid, MAF, and bellows, and inspect your PCV system hoses for any cracks, especially at the back corners of the engine and where the PCV hose plugs in by the throttle body.
