Rear End = High Pitched Noise While Moving

So I detailed my car today for the first time since late October because of winter and how does she repay me...? The rear end starts squeaking...

The noise is not suspension and it happens when I am rolling or moving. At first it was just an on and off squeak/high pitched noise coming from the outside of the car where the wheels are but now its pretty constant. Am I wrong to think that this is a shot bearing that is finally done for? The sound is not coming from the pumpkin area "thank god".

Almost forgot...it is not a hung caliper. I would know that noise...this is something else.

Wheel bearing maybe?

What is the frequency of the sound? Does it change relative to wheel rpm? Does happen at some speeds and not others?

When you say "rear end" I take it you mean the back half (or quarter) of the car, and not necessarily the diff/axle (?).

Frequency would be high and right now it's at any speed. It starts when the car starts rolling and continues until I can't hear it due to wind noise and exhaust. It's definitely coming from the wheels and not the center of the car. Sounds like the passenger side.

I'm thinking it's a wheel bearing but I've never had a wheel bearing go out so that's why I'm here lol...I heard the same noise probably 5 months ago when I was cornering VERY hard in a left hand turn but it never did it again until now. But now it's constant.

Found out something else...it stops making the noise when I turn right.

Seriously?

Same exact scenario just happened with my dad's truck and when he turned right the noise went away. It was his front driver side wheel bearing. Changed it today and the noise went away.

Well if that's the same case with mine I'm way off lol literally the opposite end of the car. I'm going to jack it up tomorrow and spin the wheels and see what it does. I'll post what I find.

His noise almost sounded like tires when I drove in it. Like how tires with a rugged tread design would sound while driving. Have heard different sounds before though.

Mine does it when I'm rolling in the driveway at less than 2mph so it's definitely not a tire like sound.

I know you say it's not a hung caliper but what about a pad sensor? How many miles on the pads?

Rear pads have probably 10-15,000 miles on them. I had to replace them right after I bought the car in 2013.

Front pads have never been replaced since I've owned the car. If I'm lucky, it will be a pad sensor because my new pads and rotors showed up this past week and are going on this coming week.

Honestly didn't think about a pad sensor...never even crossed my mind. Would it constantly make a noise even if the brake isn't being applied?

yeah.....they will squeal all the time and sound very similar to a wheel bearing going out. I've had it go both ways. Heard a sensor and thought it was a bearing and heard a bearing and thought it was a sensor. :lol: Definitely worth a look though. I've also sworn I've heard the squeal in the rear and it ends up being in the front.

That wouldn't stop through a turn like a wheel bearing does. Let us know what you find.

Jacked the car up this morning. Zero noise from the rear but I did find this...both of the front tires are making a noise. Passenger side is worse.

Passenger side is the one that is making the high pitched noise I'm hearing...no doubt about it after listening to it. If you dont like nails on a chalk board, this is not the video for you lol

Driver side sounds more like a pad that is rubbing. But what do you guys think?

New calipers, pads, and rotors are going on in the next few days by the way...

Definitely brakes/sensors imo. The passenger side sounds like the pad sensor more so than the other side. Just for grins and giggles, you could bent the little tabs back, slap the wheels back on and take her for a spin. I've done that before and it went away. But you're getting pads and rotors anyway -- that should do it just fine !!

next time push and pull on the top of the tire when it's in the air.....if it moves it's a bearing. Sounds like a brake issue to me from the video but like I say.....they can sound very similar.

I actually did that to check the tie rods and it didn't move when I had my hands at 12 and 6.

Pad sensor my vote. Could also be a warp rotor, the sound comes and goes as the wheel was turning, so the sensor would make that intermittent sound.
