Sail panel/VIN question...

Guys,

I have found a (supposedly) 1998 car at a car breakers about a three hour drive from me and what i need to know
is whether a VIN number can precisely pinpoint the build date and so either make this car a candidate for a donor
panel or to leave it alone?

He sounds very helpful and is happy for me to angle grind the roof off so i can get it onto the bench and do the
heat gun/glazing wire removal thing but i don't want to buy a roof which is already messed up.

I know..... you'll say ask him but i struggled to get us on the same page when i was describing the problem and he
had absolutely no clue what i was talking about and although he now understands i'm not convinced i'd get an accurate
answer as to any existing acne on the panel.

If the VIN is not the answer in pinpointing the build date........ what would be?!

You can enter the VIN into a couple of websites and retrieve info on the build and such -- here is one such site: VIN Decoder - Chevrolet Forum - Chevy Enthusiasts Forums
