handheld or professional
You'll spend north of $400 for a handheld or around $150 for a professional mail order tune. Strongly recommend the latter and that you utilize Tuned by Frost (site sponsor) -- he does great work and has a fast turnaround time. You simply cannot adjust all the parameters with a handheld that can be tweaked with a real tune. Our car ran and drove so much smoother after he worked his magic. As far as track times... not a clue. But a good tune will easily set loose another 8-15 hp depending upon your mods. This is especially true with any mods that affect airflow through the engine as you need a tune to take full advantage of them. I've played with this myself, however on a 1/4 mile track.
I never messed with the handhelds and went straight to purchasing HPtuners. I worked on the tune myself dialing in the AFR and timing tables, removing torque management and a few other small perimeters etc...
My 02 SS vert bone stock went a best of 13.70 at 102 mph, once satisfied with that I flashed in the tune I had been working on and the car immediately ran 13.40 at 104 mph, still stock down to the paper filter and all the smog.
So even a mild custom tune in my case was worth a solid 20 HP judging by the gain in MPH I saw. That's actually easy to find in a stock tune since these cars from the factory command a ridiculous horse power robbing 11.4 AFR at WOT.
Considering the tuning ability I gained with HPtuners along with the diagnostic capabilities that I feel are a must have if owning one of these cars, I came to the conclusion that buying HPtuners was the best bang for my buck hands down over any other bolt on I tried on that car.
Does anyone know if you can get a Dyno-tune ( or any tune)copied to a file and then download that into a handheld or an HP tune ?
I have had updates to my tune emailed and then I load them on to the PCM with HP Tuners and our laptop. I also save a copy of my tune file on my desktop and flash drive. So, the short answer is "yes". Not sure what a handheld can do.
^ Thanks Jeff, Yeah im sure a full on Dyno-tune and use of widebands would probably be best but the cost is up there and need a few hours to dial it all in, and HP tuners are used and liked by many but also not cheap ( though that will probably be my next step) and a Frost tune has alot of praise too! But to stay on topic I think ANY tune is better and will release more hidden power then the stock settings!!!
Oh the joys of owning a computer controlled car. It's never cheap to play with these things.
