So after fighting with my key to turn every time I go to turn it on I have decided to replace the lock. My question is do I have to get the new keys reprogrammed to the truck or something along those lines? I can purchase the lock and new keys and I'm pretty sure I can do it myself but I know the keys might have some sort of resistance and won't automatically work, correct?
I'm pretty sure you will need to get a new cylinder and key set. That will mean programming. Your best bet is to see a good locksmith. If you go to the dealer they will just try to sell you everything new. You may be able to get away with a rebuild.
The whole thing with new keys is only $50 :dunno: rather just buy that and do it myself. Only thing I'm confused about is if its going to work after I put the new parts in or is the computer going to say "this isn't the real key, I don't know what this is but it ain't gonna turn this baby on"
Is there a "chip" in the current ignition key?
You can tell if you look at the key right where the metal enters the black plastic (sounds kinky) There will be a little plus sign in a circle.Quote:

Re-read what I wrote! At the base of the metal portion, there is a plus sign in a circle stamped in the metal. That signifies there is a chip installed in that key.
I wondered about that. Now I'll have to go look at my Suburban key.

I've never seen or noticed that symbol on a key. My father owns a 2002 Silverado. I'll have to look at his key next time I'm over there now.

Im pretty sure if you cant physically see a chip on the key it doesnt have it. Ive had spare keys made at the hardware for my 04 sierra and they've all worked. If anything would need programming it would prob be because of something in the lock cylinder? I dont know either, im just kinda guessing
