Car cuts out when gas applied

Okay so since I did my clutch my car hasn't been running right. She cuts out almost like a misfire when I go anywhere. Example: im driving 65 in 5th when i go to 6th it cuts out gas it seems like multiple times then drives normal for a few hundred rpms then does it again.When at idle she runs smooth, I cleaned the maf and ran some fuel injector cleaner and it seemed to have helped some for a few days then back to Cuttin out. I ordered MSD wires and will be here today so when I change those I will double check spark gap. This weekend I will also change out my fuel filter. Any thing else it could possibly be? I'm crossing my fingers my fuel pump isn't heading south.

Oh and I noticed a water pump leak and will replace aswell, could that have an effect?

Any codes popping up? Post if you know them, Autozone will pull the codes and give you a ticket telling you what they are.



Bad gas? Cheapest thing to start with is using a bottle of HEET. Pour in tank see if it fixes the problem.

Next check the fuel pressure at the rail. Should read 58 lbs at idle. If lower then 40 you may need to replace:

Fuel filter - this is the next cheapest item
Fuel pump regulator
Fuel Pump

Bad gas and clogged fuel filters are #1 reasons for the problems you describe.


Another possible option - did you connect your O2 sensors correctly?


When you cleaned the MAF did you touch it or use something that is not a MAF Cleaner like this:

I double checked o2's already, cleaned maf with that same cleaner (didn't touch of course)
I bought a fuel filter, will check fuel pressure
I put in a bottle of Lucas fuel cleaner last Friday
I found it odd tho when I pulled the o2 sensors last week they were real dirty (carbon) and they are only about a month old.
Anything else?

Oh and no dummy lights came on and I haven't taken it to Autozone yet for a scan

If the O2s are black, it sounds like you may need a tune up. How old are the plugs/wires?

Wires are stock will be changed today. The plugs are less than two months old lol

what plugs you using? Depending on the plug the gap may be different.



Definitely check the fuel pressure at idle and with a couple of rev ups and post results.


Spaz also has a good point about the CATS. Are these the original CATS? If so they may be clogged up and need replacing. Believe it or not but they do clog up and go bad. That will give you a good reason to get LT's and a ORY :D

check the wires look for cracks or burnt markings. Some members have reported that the heat shields on the plugs have caused shorts.


Another thing if you are having misfires you should have a code pop up. It's possible that the CEL light is burned out.

My bet is one or more of the plug wires are almost connected, but not really. Take them all off, put them back on, and make sure they are completely connected. (Double click on the coil pack, single on the spark plug)

Okay so I did plugs and wires today. All but #8 needed removing with the rachet. #8 was hand tight, I checked all gaps just in case. #8 was tapped at .38-ish whereas the other 7 were at .50. That seems to be it, I drove to work and no issues, will still follow up with fuel pressure, fuel filter, water pump gasket, etc tomorrow. Oh and the car is lt's with catless dual exhaust. For now it seems like problem solved but I will follow up everything tomorrow or Sunday (however long it takes)

good deal, one more thing about the plugs if they are over tighten they can sometimes get a hairline crack and the plug will be effected.


#8 is always a bitch, however if you have LT's it should be a lot easier to do.

What plugs are you using?

NGk tr55's. This is my second set, they seem to do their job, that was my fault.
