1998 Trans Am A/C problem

So last summer eveerytime i turned my a/c on it made a loud noise as if a card was in the spokes of a bike so bad that to a couple points when the car was idling and i turned the a/c on the car would shut off. when i turned it on and gave the car throttle the a/c made weird loud noises like it was gonna blow. it sounded awful. well this year my a/c isnt blowing cold and i bought a bottle to fill it up and the bottle said it had the r134a in it so idk what else it can be...helpp leather seats kill mee!!

If you do this your self you will be looking at more then just the compressor. When mine blew in my 96' I had metal fragments from the compressor to the in-line filter. That was the only thing that saved the components on the inside of the car. I had to replace the dryer, condenser and the hoses in between because I could not flush out all of the metal.


All the parts are not cheap. The compressor is the most expensive.


If you go to a mechanic expect prices around the $1200 price range.

you can disconnect the belt that runs the a/c. this will keep any drag off the motor and you will still be able to run your heat when needed.

There's more but without seeing exactly all that has metal fragments in them I can't post prices.

i have some a/c parts still from when i deleted my a/c and heat. Dont have the comperssor but still have just about everything else left. Ill be back at my house this weekend and if youd like ill take a look at what i got and let you know.

please let me know,,,,and do i really have to replace all of this? mannnn.........:nono:

my a/c compressor just went out in my car...the compressor clutch locked up and fortunately directly after that the belt broke so i didnt even have to unhook it...but i only had about 30 miles on it after it started acting up and i kept the a/c turned off...and i just ordered a used compressor off of ebay which hopefully will be in tomorrow and i'll have a/c again by the end of the weekend...i'm hoping i dont have to replace all that either now that ive read this but maybe since my belt broke so quick i wont have to.

just got back in man and checked out what i got, everything but the compressor is there. Ill clean it up and get some pics to you tomorrow bro.

op also check in the parts for sale section there are a couple of guys parting out and they may have a compressor still.

well they said i need a new compressor because my compressor has metal in it and they said it needs to be flushed out new lines and shit so u tell me

you'll need everything that is posted in #10 plus a new compressor. Did they tell you if the metal got past the inline filter that I spoke about? If so then you'll need to flush the components that go on the inside cabin as well. Those are big enough that flushing them should be all that is needed. It's the hoses, condenser and dryer that never really get's the metal out. That's why I recommend replace instead of flushing.

It sux!! I know I've been there. I feel your pain. Ii had to do it to my 96' In TX not having A/C is not an option ever.

I think last time I saw this post gmpartsdirect and rock auto beat the parts stores by a huge margin on what you need.

I STRONGLY recommend do not get a used compressor. Yes they are cheap, Yes, you can get them easy BUT....you open yourself up to doing the same work/cost sooner then later when compared to a new one.
