Bogging at full throttle after headers

I just put headers on my car this week and got all of the mufflers piped up, when i went to drive it today i started noticing that at 75-100 precent throttle it would bog almost completely cutting out then fire again and accelerate as normal. Is this just the computer learning the new system or do i have a problem? i have driven it less than a mile because i didnt want to do any harm to it. Also i hooked up all the egr as it should be so i dont believe its that. I know i will need a tune but it shouldnt bog like that even without one.

You need to look over everything again.

You might have missed a connection some where. Check your O2 sensors make sure you have them connected to the right connectors (front).

Did you take anything else off or disconnect anything besides the spark plug wires, plugs, O2 sensors?

Most ppl delete the EGR and Air Pump systems when they install headers. Any reason you re-installed yours?



It almost sounds like the MAF needs cleaning.




I drove mine 8 months before I got a tune and had no issues except the check engine light

bogging makes it sound to rich.............could it be to lean instead????

You thinking an air leak near the O2 right?

it smells like its running rich. and the o2s are connected correctly. i guess i just need to drive it some more to narrow it down

could it be running that rich to make it bog?

Does it feel like its missing as well or just bogging? When i install my headers back in the day on my 01 i didnt get the far back passenger side spark plug wire on all the way.

I thought I read somewhere that if you didn't get the rear O2's deleted in a tune that the ECM would read that the cats were overheating (assuming you deleted the cats) and dump a shit load of gas to try and cool them down.

So it's actually more like a stumble? Your rear O2s will have no effect on how your car runs. The front ones will. Did you install O2 extensions, or the full length Bosch ones?

i cut each of the 4 wires and extended them.
and yes its like a stumble it will start accelerating totally back off to no throttle or noise then very harshly pick back up. it chripped the tires in second doing this several times.

I think he's going to have an issue with that is he cut before the original harness to make the extensions.

+2.. Had this happen personally on another one of my cars.. Thought I would reroute it..

I was thinking he may have cut them after the connectors. But if he cut them before the connectors, you would be correct.

how do those O2's work that splicing in extra wire would cause them to read bad?

Its the splicing that can cause the problem. The PCM not reading the correct readings/ohms/or voltage. It could be because of the wire or the connections themselves. Some have been able to make it work, but I've read more ppl have had to go back and fix it and then get the extensions.


OP did you cut before or after?

Before means the wire harness connection. After means the connection that connects to the O2. Can't remember which one is the male or female. I think the male is the O2 side.

If you did after then you are lucky in doing so and all you have to do is get Bosch 13111 O2s.

You will never match the exact resistance required for the O2's to operate correctly with a splice and extra wire. Doesn't matter where the splice occurs.

You are not seeing 'full power' as you say you are after the bog. You are seeing a lowered amount because the PCM is seeing distorted readings from the O2 sensors.
The bog is created from being WAY too rich. Kinda like 'safe mode' for Windows.
