I say, go with an IBM laptop, I like the T61 line.
What does she plan on doing with it?

Whenever I shop for myself, I think of what I want the computer to do (desktop or portable), and how long I plan on utilizing the machine.
I tend to overbuy memory initially, and factor in additional items such as a backup drive and software. If it is a laptop or other proprietary/small device I actually consider an extended service plan since parts (like screens/system boards/power supplies) can sometimes be quite expensive.
I also consider spare chargers and a spare battery with a notebook, especially if someone (like my wife) may be using it and consequently not understand technology enough to realize it needs to be charged...
If it is a family member I always install teamviewer to make remote support easier, along with Auslogics disk defrag and Ccleaner since I can use those remotely.
I would also factor in the home and student version of office or if budget is no concern a version that has Outlook.
For hardware I would highly recommend some sort of cooler if she plans on using it as a desktop.
not usuing it for anything drastic... web browsing... possibly photo editing eventually... she will prolly use it for 5 or so years as long as it stays fairly up to date...
