A 1937 Hudson Speedster inspired by historic Salt Flats endurance racingFoot to floor in chase of Bonneville's hypnotic, straight, black line for 5 miles while questing for a land speed record has become the standard protocol for Salt Flats racing, but there was another type of racing that first brought racers to Utah's ancient dry lakebed. Back then, drivers kept water tucked into cubbies to ward off dehydration and wore thick slathers of black grease smeared across their faces as protection from the wind and blistering sun because they were in the cars for the duration. Long before most of the world had even heard of Bonneville, the true test of man and machine on the Salt Flats was the 24-hour endurance race.
