auto meter tach

Hey folks, can someone please help me? I have a 66 Chevelle with an LS1 that came out of a 99 camaro. I am using a Painless Performance LS1 fuel injection harness. My problem is that I can't figure out how to install an Auto Meter Sport Comp Tach so that it'll work with my engine. The Painless wiring harness (p/n 60508) comes with a designated tach wire but it doesn't seem to work. I am using an auto meter 3 3/8 sport comp electrical analog tach. I also tried using an msd dis tach adapter but it hasn't worked yet;unless I have not found the correct wire to tap into.

Tach input (green wire) to the purple wire on the number 1 coil pack (very front cylinder on the driver's side) and set the tach to read the signal every .5 rotations.

That's at least what I did.
