I am getting ready to do some work on my motor tomorrow and have a question. What is a good pad to take off the head gasket material on the deck of the block. I have a air compressor and compressor tools but would like a pad that is safe for the aluminum (where to find it, and such) I know not to hold it in one area and to plug everything so I'm not that mechanicly (spell?) horrible. Just want something safe to use on aluminum.
I have searched and searched and came up with alot of info. Most I do not want to do. Here is what I have found that people have done.
1: Wire wheel on grinder :faint:
2: Razor blades :faint:
3: Scotchbrite pads (Don't trust the little pieces that flake off)
4: Ice scraper :hmm:
5: Spray down with some type of gasket remover/elbow grease :hmm:
I trust myself with a razor but accidents happen and don't want to risk it with my engine on the line. I have a vaccum and compressed air at hand. If no one responds I may just try some elbow grease but I wanted to hit it with a pad on a grinder THAT IS SAFE for quick and easy removal.
There is a attachment for a grinder it's a little green rubber disc made for aluminum heads I think 3m makes it
a little simple green on a rag and Ia razorblade will take everything off very quickly.....just don't slip with the blade and cut your fingers.....trust me simplegreen in a freash deep cut hurts like hell lol
I found the ice scraper to be completely useless fairly quickly in the process. It'll get the big chunks but that's about it. I used a razor blade mostly and taped the cylinders off and used a scotch brite pad even though you're not supposed too. I don't recommend either of my methods but they worked for me.

I just used a scuff pad on a air powered rotary tool...covered the lifter holes and the valley with rags.
