someone needs to make this damn thing a sticky!
Thanks TSS
nice find! newb question for you guys(just curious) how many different variations of the T56 are there, and what are the primary differences? Between say, a 98 Z28, 02 WS6, 05 GTO, 06 Z06 etc....same trans is also in the Terminator Cobras too IIRC? And the viper?
I'd say build quality is much better in the Viper as far as shift forks and synchornizers
the vettes and Goats got M12's not t56 (i think)
Interesting. Yeah my 04 goat has 'M12' on the engine info plate, someone said it has to do with max torque.
Question: how many of you(f-bod vette goat w/e) can hear your trans(gears whirring etc) when stopped at a light in neutral with the clutch out; or going through very slow-moving traffic, such as just 1st or 2nd gear doing 10-20 mph??
Sweet! I'll definitely be using this when I do my rebuild over the summer
M12 is merely the GM RPO code, not the transmission name itself. Vettes and GTO's still use the T56, just like the F-bodies, Cobras, and Vipers. The difference is in the gearing - F-bodies are RPO code MM6, GTOs are RPO code M12. They all just use slightly different versions of the same basic transmission.
ahh I see. So....(btw this is all just for my personal wondering/looking for correction and clarification the 5th gen vette is rated at 29 mpg highway, but it comes stock with 2.9x:1 gears? I know there was an option on the corvette (Z51 package iirc) to get 3.xx was it 3.73's? Not sure of the exact ratio. Same with f-bods right, you guys could get a 2.xx ratio or 3.xx depending on options, and I think the gas mileage varied between performance packages(z28/SS/WS6) However, all goats are 3.46:1, 04 is rated at 29mpg and the 05-06 are 27 or 28 I believe. If you take the C6 Z it has really low gears(2.46?) to reach 62 mph in 1st and save gas, and I wanna say it was rated at 26 MPG highway. Interesting stuff....
I beilieve now after having read a lot about this the biggest differences are the input and output shaft
Turns out I have an aftermarket shifter. That would explain the noise, also the fact it shifts very tight and notchy. I've heard the stock GTO shifter is like a "baseball bat in jello" I believe they said lol mines def not like that. Props to the previous owner!
Do anybody have a link to where i can find the GTO schematic t56? 04-06
Try the sticky under drivetrain - transmission - manual
That will give you everything you need to know about the T56
