    Post 10 bolt issues

How expensive and difficult is it to replace the bearings on the differential?? My rear end is making a horrible sound and I had it checked and gears look fine, they say it may be the bearings?? Any help is greatly appreciated!!

When I did gears they replaced everything for a additional $100, so cost should be same as a gear change minus the cost of gears..so around $450.

Is it kinda like a WAAAA-WAAAA-WAAAA sound??? Does it speed up or slow down in moderate to sharp curves??? Could be axle bearings. They're easy to change with the right tools(slide hammer, wheel bearing puller attachment, 1/2",14mm,15mm sockets, ratchet, 8mm wrench, etc.), just time consuming, and you have to pop the diff cover to get to the C-clips that hold the axles in, which calls for replacement of gear lube.

At any rate, if it is axle(or wheel, either one) bearings, get the repair bearings. They'll ride on an unworn area of your axleshaft, and they have seals already installed. Keep in mind, you may have to replace a shaft if it's pitted like crazy from wear and tear.

Hope this makes you want a non C-clip axle as bad as I want one.

I was getting the same noise only on decelaration. I took mine in and they are going to change all the bearings and while there in there I got a set of 4.10's to go in it. If it is free parts and labor then why not.

Im on my fourth rear end. 10 bolt of course. and every time it starts makeing that sound about 3-4 weeks later either a bearing would freeze up or my pinoin would snap in half. It is only like 150-200 to have your bearings changed. only bc they have to basically tear it all apart. but try not to drive on it too long i did and lost my housing axles drive shaft and t-arm. all bc the pinoin snaped in half and my drive shaft and tranny went into free spin. but you might want them to check the axles and gears while they are in there.

Replace ALL SIX bearings and races!! You only need some tools (you can never have enough tools) and a little know how. The bearings that come in our cars are shit. I did a complete overhaul on my 10-bolt with solid pinion spacer. that was 20,xxx miles ago not a peep out of it. The solid spacer does wonders for that tiny little 7.625 ring and pinion

    Air tools
    Press
    Inch Lb torque wrench
    Foot Lb torque wrench
    brass hammer and punches
    dead blow hammer
    puller
    bearing separators.
    dial calipers

    BTW great link here http://www.fullsizechevy.com/fscu/axletech/

The guy in my area who does f-body and vette work exclusively tells me that the crush spacer you use to preload the pinion gear cannot handle the torque and after the install it will crush further allowing play in the pinion and thus causing whining and ultimately failure. Do you guys have the solid spacer? I think Summit racing has it. A company in Cincinnati makes them. Around $18.
