Welcome to the site, Dave. Sorry to hear about your car.
I've a feeling most here will tell you to do an LS1 transplant and revive the old girl. Or, find yourself a 4th gen

Welcome from Colorado. I am going to also agree with the other guys about transplanting an LSx powerplant into your IROC. I am building a 1967 Chevelle and put an LS2 w/LS3 heads and a Tremec 5 speed behind it. It will be worth it, I promise. Check out my build under the Muscle Car thread. Good luck on what ever you decide to do and glad to have you on the forum.
There are some things you just can't test in a white lab coat.

Silver & Blue- 02 Camaro SS, 04 GTO
Welcome to the site Dave. Do you like the old IROC ? If so, get an LS1 and a T-56 for her and get it back on the road. You will need about 4k to do the job.
My ride is a 2002 Camaro SS SLP #3296 with 30k, LTH, 3" Y, CME, Frost tune, K&N, ported TB, Blackwing lid, Bellows, MSD, Denso Iridium, and 85mm MAF, Bilsteins, Eibach springs, SLP strut brace, Adj. Panhard, TA Girdle, UMI, Pro 5.0, Nitto NT555
My wife has a 2004 GTO with the rare SAP, 18" wheels, K&N Cold Air System, MSD, Ported TB, Frost tune, Denso Iridium, Flowmaster cat-back, 3200 Yank, 75k

Even if its a 5.3 liter it still be a big step up from the old tpi 350. I think so anyway. But try to get a 5.7 if possible.
