My first car.. ls1/6 speed
Im 15 and i just picked up a '98 Camaro. It has 68k miles and runs perfect. I love driving it, but im averaging 12mpg in the city with light driving. Anybody know whats wrong? Does it just need a tune?
Oh and by the way I am also restoring a 1970 camaro to show car condition with my dad and ive got my own money in it.. I would only spend that on a chevy

Welcome! Be careful with your car, your fairly young. As for the fuel mileage well maybe do a tune up. Check air filter and such and get your foot off the pedal

What's wrong is you're 15 and you've got a car that I didn't get until I was 27. Ah the injustice of it all
Does it have a K&N type filter? If so I recommend checking/cleaning the MAF. Heck even if it doesn't, still check the MAF. If it's dirty/bad then you're not getting the right air/fuel mix. I had that issue, cost me 4mpg...
Enjoy it!

Welcome to the site!
You've already received good ideas on taking care of your mpg issue... The most important thing you need to know, is to respect the power these cars have
Enjoy it and be safe with it
Oh, and post pictures and tell us about your progress with the 70 in the Classic Muscle section too

I'm gonna agree with pulling your foot from the pedal a lil bit I've got 223k miles and a bad spark plug I'm still averaging around 300 miles on the tank and be careful with it these cars really do have alot of power for your age

I dont know why all of you think its too much power... The power is exactly why i bought it. And yes I payed for it. And as of right now im driving it like an old lady trying to get as much out of my tank as i can, so thats not the problem. But thanks for all the tips I guess ill have to check it all.
Here are some pictures of the 1970, and a bad picture of my ls1(dirty, i had just got it home)
Im thinking about Borlas and some of the new zr1s for the ls1(if i can get them to fit)

I dont know why its taking so long for my other post to show up, but the 70 camaro has a 383 with 415hp/440tq in it (dart shp block, aluminum 2.02 heads, forged internals, holley street avenger, and march serpentine pulleys) and then a built th400( mild shift kit, 2300-2500 stall) and for the rear end, GM 10 bolt with 3.42s. We need to put some c clips in it.
It was my dads first car.Last edited by chevy888; 07-08-2010 at 04:38 PM.

Just a though.... I have a cutout after the cat thats open. Would that be causing the terrible gas mileage? I bought the car with the cutout open and i havnt put it back on yet.
