Here's what you need to do, go here: http://www.caswellplating.com/ and if you have the cash ideally you should get this setup http://www.caswellplating.com/buffs/plasticbuffkit.htm
It is simply the best setup you can get for polishing plastic. The speed of the machine is actually setup for plastic, as plastic needs to be polished at a lower speed than metal.
If you can't justify the cost because you simply don't have a lot of plastic to polish, don't have the space for the machine, or just don't have the money, then get the arbor kit which will fit any electric drill, get that here: http://www.caswellplating.com/buffs/buffing_kits.htm get the ARBKIT 12, if you go this route you will need to buy the compound separately, go here http://www.caswellplating.com/buffs/compound4.html and get both plastic polishing compounds using the more abrasive Grade P-112 product code F515-6165 first, then the ultra fine Grade P-22 product code F515-6163
The way I do it, is to work in reverse of the way most people do it, maybe a little more time consuming, but worth it in the end 'cause you'll never be left with a cloudy finish.
I start off with the P-112, if there is still haze you need to begin wetsanding, again, I do it in reverse of the way most people do it, most people start off with way too low of a grit, then wonder why when they have worked their way through finer and finer grits and then polish it, it is still cloudy.
What you want to do with plastic, is start off high, start off with with the polish using the courser polish first, then the ultra, unless you can see right off that the course polish didn't remove most of the haze, in that case begin wetsanding with 2500, then polish with the fine again, if MOST of the haze is gone, try the Ultra and check your results, if still there are areas of haze, drop your sanding grit down to 2000 and repeat polishing.
If you go the arbor/drill route keep in mind you do not want to have your drill spinning too fast, many 3/8" drills can reach speeds of up to 2800 rpms which is way too high and you'll burn it right quick, most half inch drills are too slow, topping out at 850 rpms, so use a 3/8" drill but be sure to turn down that speed. This is again another great reason for the machine, cause one always questions, is my drill too fast or too slow at the speed I have it set for. Also it is of course harder to run the flannel wheels over your piece evenly with a nice even pressure with a drill, ya just can't beat a buffing machine.
If anyone is interested they also have a 3/4 HP machine with extended arms which also operates at the lower 1100 rpm speed, that's the one I have. http://www.caswellplating.com/buffs/34hpbuffkit.html It's great for larger pieces like tail lights. Stands for all of their buffing machines are less than thirty bucks.
Remember buffing and polishing is messy work, make sure you have a place where you can do it and not have to worry about the mess and wear clothes you don't care about.Last edited by {FzS}BlacKMagicK; 10-21-2007 at 11:20 PM.
